Hardtail Savage Chopper Build Log
01/16/08 at 05:29:31

Instead up having multiple threads about my chopper build, figured it would be better to start one and use it as an ongoing log, and update it as things progress.

Speaking of progress...
Here's the latest pic with the seat mounted and the electronic tank  & fender mocked in place. I tried to get some exhaust bends to make the intake manifold, but it was Sunday and only thing open was pep boys / autozone. What they had didn't really fit what I was looking for. Next up (after I get back from vacation) is fab'in up the brackets for the e-box and rear motor mount and getting that intake figured out.

Note on photo - the straps and ties I used to mock up the e-box and fender have been photoshopped out. The e-box cover is also photoshopped. Helps me visualize where things are going to go.

smokin_blue:
the pic totally make the apes look bigger than they are. they're actually mini-apes, they sit just below my shoulder when i'm on the bike.
but yeah, I guess they're the opposite of clubmans, but not super tall by any means. My next build, whatever it may be, will probably use clubmans or clip ons.

I know what you mean about pics being decieving. Everytime I post a pic of my bike, I get the " my arms don't reach that high" statement. Mine are only 12 inch and run at shirt pocket level.   Hutch

Been awhile since I've updated, here's the latest pic - things are coming along, was able to crank out a lot this weekend...

The rear fender support struts are going to change, and this pic is before I welded the ripple pipe end tip to the exhaust. The seat pivot point also needs to change. It's coming along though.

The 90 degree carb manifold is pretty much finished, just needs to 100% secured, my leg position with that there is a bit wonky, it clears, but it's close. I could see my leg bashing into the carb on occasion, so I might change the bend to a 45 to get it away from it a bit more. After I get that done, I'll weld up the bottom plate to the frame that the battery box mounts to. Then I'll probably start working on some of the more mechanical stuff.... I tell ya, not looking forward to wiring this baby.

It is coming along nicely. Should be worth the effort, and will definately put a smile of pride on your face with doing it yourself. It has for me for years. Nothing better than knowing your bike from one end to the other, and inside out.   Keep us posted of your progress.  Hutch

I'd put a manual lever on the decomp and leave off the clutch interlock.  So you could just reach down and activate it.

Wiring should be fun, you don't have all of the supid connectors and mismatched wires.

Whaddya mean"Change the pivot point on the seat"? Are you gonna be able to get the rear of the seat higher relative to the front? Or, is it okay? Looks like I would slide out the back of it. It is a good looking deal, no doubt. I like that exhaust, looks , well, Looks Good!

Update: I know it doesn't look much different, but it is. Finally got some time in the workshop yesterday... finished up the fender supports, finished welding the exhaust (now I just gotta wrap it), worked out some final details on the electronics tank, changed up the seat a bit (new seat hinge & springs), got the throttle/grips/cable on and working, flipped the carb to the left side.

Still a lot more to do....I'm hoping to have it done by the end of the month, but looking at my "still to do" list, that might be a bit too agressive. We'll see.
