I have a ’96 Savage that has been running great up until a few weeks ago when it started backfiring (on the freeway going 65) when I put any load on the throttle. It does take more load when the choke is out and no backfiring occurs when the bike is in neutral or with the clutch in. It will not go any faster than 45 mph in 4th gear with out backfiring and loosing power.

No modifications that I know of have been made to the carb.

Any suggestions?

As suggested I'd sure run it on PRI a bit - could be something like the vac line cracked going to the petc0ck

Might be worthwhile to drain the carb and see what comes out - clean gas or something else

While it sounds like a fuel issue - it would also be worthwhile to remove the seat and go through all the conections as well as the two wires going to the coil as when the bike is under load there is a lot more vibration going on.

If the bike doesn't have an inline fuel filter get one and install it. Let us know how it works out and luck with it.

Thanks for all the info.

So far I have removed the carb and everything looks ok in there. It is a bit dirty so I am cleaning it up. The jet appeared to be fine and not clogged, but we shall see after a night of soaking in cleaner. Any suggestions on what I should be using for the inline fuel filter?

The tubing is in great condition and not cracked at all, so I will make sure I secure that connection to the petc0ck just to be sure.

I figured since I was in the carb I should just make the spacer and idle screw mods. It did have a little backfire (more like a poot) on shut down. Mostly I am hoping to get a little more power.

Thanks for the tip on the coil connections; I will check those when I get home tonight.

This really is a great forum. The tech specs section was a great help in figuring out how to remove everything (tank, carb, spacer...) Keep up the good work.
