The FI bikes i've been around do not do a real fine job of this as the just use a mixture map with out feed back sensors other than the temp break over from cold to hot. They have predictive sensors via vacuum and rpm - I was reading that bmw and honda are using feedback 02's so it can tell if it was right - they may be spot on like fi autos.

WIthout the O2 sensor feedback, the FI is just a guess.

I know the newer BMW engines that are FI use an O2 sensor.  I assume that is for closed-loop control of the FI, like a car.   I think these are generally fitted with a 3 way catalyic converter.

I don't know if this required to meet the current ECE standards or if they're just aiming to meet the "harmonized" US and ECE standards that rea scheduled to hit in the 2010 model year.

The results of the certification tests are posted on EPA's website, and the BMWs have low emissions.  But I think all of the bikes with 3 way cats do very well.  I guess that's the shape of the future.

Seems like they're having a tough time with air cooled FI bikes in cold weather - this one of mine has been known to stay on the cold cycle if it's below 40f and that cut's the mpg about in half - an aftermarket over ride is being tested by the dealers that amounts to a toggle switch you throw when ever you think the bike is warmed up.

Air cooling may be out the door along with carbs.

Thumperclone,
The rule of thumb is -every 5000ft up in elevation- 1 size down in jet size. If You are only going to stay 1 day in higher than Your elevation , in my opinion it is not worthed to get dirty. The bike will still perform OK. In Your case it is only one size difference, compared with Your residence. Just think about all the guys, that come from the low planes and go to the high mountains- how many of them do You think, rejet in the way up ?
About the FI, Cat's and all that crap- Yes , unfortunately this is  is the future- SMART VEHICLES FOR STUPID PEOPLE.  This is what the SYSTEM wants - You pay more, You work more, more money change hands- more money for the parasites.
