Tech Question - Speedometer
01/16/06 at 22:38:29

Hello all...

Simple question, not so simple to find answer:

Speedo cable RPMs at 60 mph?

I'm looking to replace the speedo with one from Autometer. Aside from looker much more badass, their mechanical speedos also feature trip meters, something I've wanted for some time. Autometer already has an outsource shop that makes adapters to change the speedo cable ratio to whatever I/we need, but I can't find the data anywhere...

Torque... you're the man!

If you're numbers are correct we can deduce that:

if
   40=60
1400=  X

Then
40x = 1400*60
40x = 84000
40x/40 = 84000/40
x=2100

Answer to my original question is:

2100RPM to 60MPH for a stock Savage

to make the Autometer Mechanical Speedo work u need a 21 to 10 gear ratio changer. I'll keep ya'll posted when I get the changes done!

And if you use the other data point:

2900/85=x/60

x= 2047

That's about 2% error which is probably closer than the speedo.

Is the stock speedo really correct anyways?  Overhere they have these little mobile units that they set up on the side of the road that displays your speed as you drive by.  They always read a little slower then my stock speedo, but they seem to match my bicycle speedo.

I had heard that the speedo drive is a ratio of 2:1.

Now that you mention it, I've always found those mobile units always agree with the speedometer in whatever vehicle I'm riding or driving.  I was clocked on both my bike and cage the other day and they appeared spot dead on.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone that has argued that they were caught on radar and it was way off the speed they thought they were doing.

Anybody have different experience?

All Honda cruiser speedometers are off about 5 mph at 60. That would be 8.33 percent off. I guess it keeps bikers' speeds down  Roll Eyes

Autometer guages are really really nice. I used to use them in my car.

I believe the proper ratio is 2.1:1 or at least that is the ratio of all the speedos we sell.
What size speedo is needed for the sock housing??
I did a recessed 2" speedo on our savage, but we altered the tank mount for that, what size is the stock opening?
