Hard to start
12/08/05 at 03:39:57

Hi there,
I've  just registered to this forum. I have a question.

I have an 93' savage with 5.8k mileage on the meter. Never ride it so often actually. Now, the bikes was in the store for 8 yrs without ever starting it. Recently, I pull the bike out, service it and its alive again. Due to my busy life, it was not started for about a week and after that I find it to difficult to start again. My mechanic said he had changed the jet to a bigger ones. Its was okay at the workshop but later the problem arise again. Can smell the petrol whenever I try to start it.

Can anybody tell me what could probably go wrong with this bike?

thanks & regards

There are several things that could do this and as long as it sat - 8 years - I'd sure go through the carb - did the mechanic say why he rejetted the carb and what size he used?

By the way there is a small washer under the main jet that if this is not install with let the jet tube pop out of place causes all manner of flooding issues.

Make sure the the hose that runs from the back of the petcock to the intake side of the carb is attached.

I had the same problem when I first installed bigger main jet. I have to adjust the idle screw(the left one near the throttle cable) to get butterfly inside the carb open up a bit = more air come in to start up. When the engine is warm, everything is nice and dandy; but when it is cold, Savage have a sh!tty start Smiley

If Your mechanic has worked on the bike, he should have some responcibility. Why don't You bring him the bike and ask him to go over his work again?
In the mean time:
1. charge the battery fully
2. put the petcock on PRY for about  10 sec and put back in ON pos.
3.DO NOT use choke and push the start button. If it doesn't start, give it gas and NO CHOKE and try again

As Reelthing said, the brass washer on the main jet being left off has caused this issue more than once.

Right Gary?
