Newbie checkin in

Hey Guys and Gals ,

I'm a new Savage rider. I've just had my 97 about 3 weeks now. I haven't ridden a bike since the seventies. (Yeah I know, I'm older than dirt.) I'm not much of a mechanic  but I'm going to give it a shot.  I don't know anything about the history of this bike but someone has removed the plug from the fuel adjustment screw so I guess they have made some adjustments. The bike seems to run kind of rough. I suppose I need to check out the spark plug and see if the white spacer has been removed. I'll probably get around to this when I have some time off in a couple of weeks.

This is one great forum.

(I'm also kinda new to  forums so forgive me if I don't know all the secret handshakes.)

Welcome aboard, Organicman. I started riding in '73 & there are a few more of us older riders here. The Search feature here is the best source of Savage info online. Ride safe.  8)

Greetings, it's nice to see the youngsters taking motorcycles up again.  '70's would mean you were 15-25 when riding last.  If you are like me the skills are sorta rough.  If you haven't done so already I strongly recommend the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RIder Course -- it is a great refresher and even if you do know it all it is good to have this verified.

As for the forums, without the face to face or even voice inflections it is easy to take something the wrong way, causing ill feelings.  Don't let anything get to you, if something strikes you wrong just ignore.  (Same as riding -- just avoid the idiots as they will run into other idiots and get what they deserve then.)

Thanks for all the replies Guys and Gals

I did take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RIder Course before I got back on a bike. Great refesher course.

I hope I can contribute more to this forum as I get more familiar with the bike.

Oh by they way, My Bike backfires and I love it.

Well being really new to motorcycles (as in no riding experiance at all) I took the MSF basic riders course and I totally agree that everybody should take at least one of the courses.  It was very informative and taught me the basics so I could ride (something that I had wanted to do since I got my drivers license).   Well I guess that is my pitch for the safety course.

Welcome organic, you don't need to know a lot about wrenching on bike, but a little basic knowledge helps.  With the help of the people on this forum you should have no problems working on your thumper.

Unlike some of us with the older Savages, mine is an '86, you also can give your local shop a call for a second opinion, for what that's worth.  I know every time I've called the dealer half of them don't even know that the Savage and the s40 are the same bike.

Welcome!  Nice to have another rider from the '70's!  I'm too new here to know any handshakes, except that I love my '02.
