What bugs me is the hole is bigger than the spring.
It's like the whole filter was coming out.

I don't know, but I agree with Mr_650.  Look at the filter picture from the Tech Corner....


Something doesn't match here, and my guess is that some people shouldn't be allowed to turn a wrench  Tongue

the mechanic said he ran 4 quarts of oil through it and it ran fine--with his foot holdin the broken piece in place---he dont know whats wrong.

Looks like the cover is about $22 plus a spring, o-ring's, and filter - i'd replace um' fill it with oil - pull the  head breather hose - is it still puffin? - and give it one more chance - it is strange - maybe it was just weak from some thing - got stepped on or some such -
