Begin Brag now: cphilip takes the trophy!
03/21/05 at 08:58:08

Been rather busy with this and not been on much. Just wanted to brag a bit here. I finaly got this Scooter completed and went down to Madison Georgia this weekend to a Rally/Show with it. It was held at the Weiner Microcar Museum in Madison. About 60 scooters there I would say, maybe more.

Four categories, Best Vespa, Best Lambretta, Best Rat bike and Best Custom.

I walked away with the Trophy for Best Custom on this Black and Chrome T5.

Some of you may remember me posting progress pictures.

Here it is finished and sporting it's first win.

...end brag.... :-D

Thanks guys... It was a bunch of work and a lot of fun.

This is now my fifth one so its kinda coming easier in some ways. However this was a pretty difficult one for the parts end of it. A lot of little bits from England and Germany and even a place out in San Diego to get it where I wanted it. Its finished as far as suspension and body and trim... but its not finished performance wise! I am kitting it up to 172 cc with a Malossi top end. Nikasil lined with plated rings.  I have already added a performance exhaust. Not a real high end wild one... but some better anyways. Sounds like a dirt bike now, LOL. And I am upjetting it slightly when that kit arrives. Currently waiting on a head to be profiled for it so I can do that. Increase in speed? Reportedly now 85 mph. Currently in the 124cc configuration it clocks at 65 mph. Gonna be dam scary on 10" wheels. I am currently redoing the brakes in the rear with some "Performance Pads". Figure I gonna need em! "/

Hey yea... these are dam fun rides. Good complement to the Savage. I use the Savage for the longer runs and this about town and such. Realy freaks the people out when you blow by em at 65 on "a dam moped"! The reactions are priceless. Worth every penny.

Most vintage scooterists consider this "the ugly one" with its mid 80's attempt at modernization. This model was never imported into the US directly. But a few have been brought in. This one is from Italy. It however is the fastest most agressive motor one they ever built from the factory. So I tried to work within that theme of what it was. Basicaly a racer. The black and chrome seemed to fit its style. That black is actualy very finely speckled with chrome flake within it. It lights up in full sunlight. But is stealth when in subdued light like that.

My current new project is something really special. One your going to love. Its a 1961 Allstate Vespa and it will be accompanied with a matching period Sidecar. Its for the wife. I got a splendid solid 61 here I am currently going through before I break it down for paint. And I am negotiating on the sidecar now. This one will be slower... but very early 60's period look to it. Bubble butt round things. Very cool.

Forgot to tell you the coolest part of the weekend!

The place that hosted this is the Weiner Microcar Museum in Madison GA. He is into scooters too. He is decendant of the Dubble Bubble gum family. Inherited it all it seems. Owns all the cars you will see there and in this link. Privately owned that is. He let us use his farm and opened his Museum to us plus he has a lot of Motorized toys he gave us free use of. His own private track runs round the field we camped in. We drove all sorts of stuff all day and night. He had the local Police escort us on our ride. And we stretched for a mile I would guess.

It is reported that he recently sold out the Gum business for a cool $250 Million!

Would be a nice bike ride and great place to visit if you get a chance.

I have never been that attracted to them. They certainly have thier following and unfortunately a fairly well to do following at that. Sort of nostalgic followers that had them as a kid. And want one again. They get rather pricey to obtain these days for what they are. But they always lacked style and performance. After all it was a small engine company just sticking their engine into a box of a scooter to increase motor sales. Never much styling or performance thought to them. And the followers seem willing to pay overly much for one. Did you know Cushman imported Vespa's for a few years and placed their name on them? Yep... there are Cushman Vespa's. Not for a very long period mind you. And of course they made Cushmans under the Allstate name as well. But that whole crowd is a different group of collectors. And I am not that enamored with that style of bike. I have studied them a bit. But would have to stumble on a real deal before I would consider it. I can find some fairly complete and running (or almost) Vespa's out there for $500. Not easily but I do now have a network of people that will tell me about them. And since I am going to have to sink another 6 or 7 hundred into them I can afford to do that. Not so Cushman scooters rarely do you find for under 1500. And Vespa parts are still readily made as they are still making them in eastern countries just alike. Cushman parts are not.  If they are remade they are small custom shops and or NOS parts someone has horded. And the very late ones are not even Scooter style. They are small motorcycles. Mini bikes more or less. And another thing that turns me off about them is the lack of ability to make them perform past stock. Most of them are one speed and a few of them are simple two speed. And their speed is very limited. And so is their suspension. There is not much you can do to them to improve that. What you end up with is a odd looking mini bike most times with a simple go cart type performance.

Not sure I follow you? Typo? Ah... well I probably will not show it again. And you don't actualy "enter" it in these things. Its done by the host club whom sort of recognise and secretly ballot through the day. Every scooter that shows up is technicaly "entered" and it has to be something that catches thier eye and they all are enamored with.  Most times you win one and your basicaly off the list after a win. Not technically but practicaly.  So the trophy's get shared around if there is a few nice scooters there. Unless its at another major national rally you might get back in the hunt there. Probably would. And I don't really intend to attend one of those because they are so far away from me. Mainly in Vegas once a year. If anything I might get a small spread in Scoot Quarterly out of this one. Thats about it.

I might be getting back to you on that.  Amanda expressed interest in two wheels to commute to college.  I mentioned that I had picked out the Vivo125 and was told that I had no business picking anything out for her and that she wanted a Vespa.  Can I get a clean and reliable Vespa (125cc+) for about $2G?

Hey C Phillip, I just saw your pics on scoot dot net. I didnt know you took honars at the fist city rally. Those guys really know their sh*t! I had the privledge of meeting all those guys at Tampa 2 stroke sleep away camp last year. My cousin "Flib" lives in athens and runs with all of those guys. He rides a silver sprint with a yellow and black checkerd flag on the cowl.  Small world.
Sweet T5! Now that its fine tuned, will it suck the headlights out of a P200?
