worst rides
10/13/04 at 08:27:03

have a best rides topic, so it's time for the worst rides...

today my beloved HOV lane was closed due to some one attempting to park his truck over the concrete barrier.
this meant i had to ride THROUGH the dallas mixmaster. alone. for the first time.

NOT gonna do that anytime soon.

It's unfortunate that on some days, HOV stands for "Have Overturned Vehicle".

Like someone said, a bad day on a motorcycle is better than a good day at work.  However, I'll submit that, since we live in West Texas, the only time our rides are not great is when the sand is blowing 50 MPH.

What's HOV really mean?  Around these parts all lanes are fair game.

HOV means High Occupency Vehicle.  It's a incentive for people in the DFW area to carpool.  Only cars with 2 or more can drive in this lane.  Sunny, you're much braver than I, there is no way in hell I would drive in Dallas, anywhere, anytime.

Now, my worst ride by far, has to be early this year.  I rode to work in 50 degree weather...real nice ride....BUT, while I was at work a front blew through, and the temperature and wind chill dropped into the teens.  I had only a leather jacket and thin gloves.  I managed to scrounge up an extra layer of gloves, and an extra pair of jeans.  When I finally got ready to ride, I thumbed the starter and the engine turned over about a half a turn and died.  Dead battery.  I jumped it off(barely) and hauled ass home.  The whole time holding my free hand on the veins of the motor to keep feeling in my hand.  It's really hard to throttle with your left hand.  Did I mention, I live 40 miles from work?  Worst ride by far.  Thought I'd die before I got home.

it really really isn't that bad. you just have to have the traffic patterns worked out before you do it. and know the roads really well.
early people are so hopped up on caffiene, no way.
people driving after 9am are late and no better.
but i found that if i leave the house at 8am i'm in a bunch of more laid back people who are getting to work on time. i'm usually in the protected hov by 8:30am which is a FUN ride. sometimes i even have motorcycle cops riding with me.

if i miss my window due to having to leave work early(planned) or having to come in late(and miss using the hov) i drive the mustang. i do NOT ride on central expressway. and i generally do ride anywhere up here that i have not driven to a few times prior unless i have an escort.

Yeah, I ride on 75 Central to 635 LBJ and take the HOV lane from where it starts at around Hillcrest/635 all the way until it ends just prior to 35E and then deal with normal lanes from there to Irving/Las Colinas.  It sure is nice to be able to use that lane when traffic is moving at 20 MPH in the other lanes.  That and it's usually bike cops that patrol it for cagers without passengers.  Usually if you wave at 'em in passing they wave (or nod) back.
