it really really isn't that bad. you just have to have the traffic patterns worked out before you do it. and know the roads really well.
early people are so hopped up on caffiene, no way.
people driving after 9am are late and no better.
but i found that if i leave the house at 8am i'm in a bunch of more laid back people who are getting to work on time. i'm usually in the protected hov by 8:30am which is a FUN ride. sometimes i even have motorcycle cops riding with me.
if i miss my window due to having to leave work early(planned) or having to come in late(and miss using the hov) i drive the mustang. i do NOT ride on central expressway. and i generally do ride anywhere up here that i have not driven to a few times prior unless i have an escort.

Now, my worst ride by far, has to be early this year. I rode to work in 50 degree weather...real nice ride....BUT, while I was at work a front blew through, and the temperature and wind chill dropped into the teens. I had only a leather jacket and thin gloves. I managed to scrounge up an extra layer of gloves, and an extra pair of jeans. When I finally got ready to ride, I thumbed the starter and the engine turned over about a half a turn and died. Dead battery. I jumped it off(barely) and hauled ass home. The whole time holding my free hand on the veins of the motor to keep feeling in my hand. It's really hard to throttle with your left hand. Did I mention, I live 40 miles from work? Worst ride by far. Thought I'd die before I got home.
