Buying a used bike, what to look for?
09/20/04 at 13:29:05

I am looking at buying a 1989 Savage (for my wife to learn), saw an ad in my local paper for $1500. Before I call to find out the mileage, shape of the bike (ad claims bike runs well, which makes me wonder), etc., what should I look for?
How many miles is too many miles in a bike? should I use the same judgement as if buying a car? I hate to buy the bike and find out it needs new tires, brakes, clutch, new cables, battery, new gaskets, etc.

Thanks!

First - I don't think I would let my wife ride something that I wasn't sure about.    If you aren't sure - then don't do it.

"How many miles is too many" - it matters who put those miles on the bike and if regluar maintenance was done.  My Savage has 20,000+.  I know of others that have twice as much.

"Same judgement as buying a car" - yes and no.  If the car breaks down you can pull over a bit safer than on a bike (especially when on the side of the road).  You should make sure she has a riding buddy until both of you are comfortable with her skills (do the MSF course!)

"Hate to buy new parts" ...  Well, it IS a 1989 (although the Savage was sold in the States in '86 and '86, then didn't come back till 1995 I believe ).

Is it worth $1500?  That's how much I bought my '96 for.  Of course, I didn't haggle the price, I knew it was what I wanted - needing some TLC (Tender Loving Chopping).  Was at 16,000 miles then.  It's given me troubles at times (okay, most of them have probably been my own fault) but all in all, a very reliable bike.

I thought about buying another Savage - was a '86 - was leaking gas, started up, bald tires, rusty, front fork seals were leaking, covers missing.  Looked like the front wheel may have been bent.  Guy wanted $500 - I didn't bite.  As soon as I saw it I knew it wasn't worth the time and expense.  Since he was selling it from eBay, I just bid $150 and some other person bought it (and then had it on auction for $450 10 days later).

If you maintain your own bike, you should be able to tell if it's worth it.  But remember who's going to be riding it.  Sure, she may drop it with mistakes but I know I would want my wife to be riding something she could know will do what she asks.   New cables and brakes, battery and maybe tires is something I would change out and keep the old if I thought it was worth it as spares.  Change the oil, brake fluid, and any other fluids on getting it.  Change the filters (air, oil, gas).  Make sure it's going to be there when she needs it to be.

If you're not mechanically inclined (and don't intend on getting a manual) it is cheaper to take it to a shop and have a pro go thru the systems check. If the owner is sure it "runs well" then he won't have any problem letting you do that. Everything that was mentioned above should be checked. Mileage on bikes depends alot on how they've been ridden. I always ask "why have you decided to sell it?" That question and leaks around seals have been a major determining factor for my used bike purchases.

Best of luck

Savages weren't sold in the U.S. in 1989.  They were sold in '86, '87, '88 and then were not sold here until 1995.  I'd do a little digging.  If it is an '88, you should also consider that the Savages sold in the U.S. in the '80s were four speed vs. five speed.  For more detail on what has changed over the years, see this topic:

Savage Parts That Have Changed '86-'05

BTW, it is great that your wife wants to learn.  It is fun riding as a couple on one bike and even more fun on two bikes!

All the above.  A lot of good suggestions.

Personally, I think that $1500 is too high even if it is in great shape.  You know why?

I have a copy of the first Savage Ad.  They cost $1999.00 new in 1986.

Put the Roadie's two bits worth in...

I'd say you may want to spend more on a newer bike.  My 02 was $2500 (not much more than what that guy's offering!).  Of coarse, location and demand are one thing that drives price.  The riding season's almost over here in a month, so more bikes will go up for sale.  So the fall/early winter is a great time to look. (So is VERY early spring.)

Get a "biker" buddy to go out looking at bikes with you.  You'll be surprised how much two eyes miss that four don't.  Look down the bike for any tell tale signs of abuse.  (Check the rim edges, scrapes on sides, turn signals, tank, ect.)  Does the bike have a "racing" case guard (assuming it's not a savage) then avoid stuff like that.  Tires, are they worn evenly? Do they have any "abuse" look to them?

Ride the bike, if not endorsed, have the "biker" buddy do it.  Lots of things stick out on a ride.

There's a great guide to finding a GOOD used bike:

http://www.clarity.net/~adam/buying-bike.html

READ THE ABOVE!  It's more comprehensive than anything we can tell you here. (Though Greg seems to know a lot..  )  Roll Eyes

Observation is the key to buying anything new.  Don't just look at the paint to see if it's shines.  Anyone can do a "Tennessee tune-up".

Thank you all for your response, lots to think about.
I was not able to get a hold of this guy selling the bike, maybe he meant a 1989 instead? I also thought that the price was a bit high, specially since new were selling for $1900 - thanks Greg  Smiley
I'll keep looking for something else, we want something relatively small (prefer a 250 cc.) that we can take to the school parking lot and practice driving before taking the class next year, it would be nice for her to get the feel of riding a bike, plus the fact that you have to use both hands and feet (she drives a stick and knows how to ride a bicycle, so that helps).
Again, thank you all for your response, lots to think about!

One more thing -  if you do get a second Savage, you will have something to tear apart and have fun rebuilding if your wife decides that it isn't for her!

The Savage IS small.  The three bikes I was considering, and a Honda of similar displacement to the Savage:
Bike: Yamaha
Virago
Suzuki
Savage
Suzuki
Marauder
Honda
VLX
Engine: 249cc twin   652cc single 249cc single 583cc twin
Wheelbase: 58.7" 58.3" 57.1" 63.0"
Length: 86.2" 85.8" 85.0" n/a
Width: 32.1" 28.3" 32.1" n/a
Height: 44.9" 43.5" 42.9" n/a
Seat Ht: 27" 27.6" 27.8" n/a
Weight: 302 lbs 352 lbs 302 lbs 452 lbs
Tire, F: 3.00-18 100/90-19 110/90-16 100/90-19
Tire, R: 130/90-15 140/80-15 130/90-15 170/80-15

As you can see, the 650 Savage is dimensionally in line with the 250's while the 600 Honda is on a half-foot longer wheelbase (with an unlisted but obviously longer overall length.)  As for weight, the 650 Savage is only 50 pounds heavier than the two 250's, and a full 100 pounds lighter than the Honda 600.

Paladin mentioned the VLX 600 Shadow from Honda.  My best friend had one when I got my Savage.  I rode his a bit, because I tried to buy it from him.  He said he couldn't part with it, so I bought the Savage, and a few months later he sold it for less than I offered him.  Anyway, I really enjoyed the little bike, but, it did have a chain drive (which I don't like), and it was a lot heavier than the Savage.  They have a good resale value though.  Much higher around here than the Savage.  He rode the Savage after I got it and he said it handled much better, but was a little too short for him.  The Shadow was several inches longer.  To each his own, I've never regretted buying the Savage, and I'd buy another if a good deal ever arose.
