Fuel gauge... sorta

OK guys, after a couple months, I have made an interesting discovery...

My Savage makes a funny rattly noise when it needs fuel. No, the tank isn't loose... I think it's the gas inside the tank causing this. I can tell this is the issue because when I squeeze my legs in on the tank, that particular noise stops.

About 15 miles after I notice that noise, I have to switch to reserve. Just something I noticed that you all might want to know about.

You probably have a wire connector, cable or something rubbing on the bottom of the tank.  When there is a bunch of fuel it dampens the rattle, with less fuel the noise becomes louder.

Or could be a siphoning noise, kind of a gurgle when it's low?

There's no problem that a full tank of gas and a sunny day can't fix!

Dave, could be something in the tunnel making a rattle... I'll have to check for rub marks this winter when I pull the tank again.

Kris, no, not a gurgle, definitely more of a rattle, and I don't think a siphon noise would go away by squeezing the tank with my legs... this does.

Meh, in any case, it gives me a short warning that I can expect to hit my reserve soon... I'm not complaining, just telling you all about something I've noticed.

Interesting observation. My tank rattles (high frequency, almost a screech). But it only does it occasionally. It was rattling today, and, my tank is almost at reserve.

Maybe I should learn to stop worrying and love the rattle.  Smiley
