Hi Guys,

I’m experimenting a bit with tuning my cylinder head. I’m currently working on a valve job and pocket porting; using a coefficient of 0.87 for the 33mm intake valve gives me 28.36mm.
Unfortunately, that doesn't remove the casting flaw or notch located just below the valve seat.
I’m now considering a coefficient of 0.89, which yields 29mm, as that would allow me to remove more of that casting flaw.

What coefficient do you guys use when flowing the Savage head?

I don,t want to be that guy that remove,s to much and kills the flow.

I think that a smooth transition is more important than adhering to a coefficient.
However, adhering to that coefficient will produce a transition to the valve seat which is most favourable, particularly at low opening of the valve.
When using a higher numerical value coefficient, the transition becomes like a sharp corner, whereas a smaller throat allows for a rounded transition.
This can be further refined by cutting multible angles into the seat and sourroundings, or to use a Serdi machine, with a profiled cutter which creates a rounded profile.
Some folks say that the multi angle cut, with it's sharp edges promotes better atomization.
My 5 cents.

Thanks for your five cents. I’m kind of torn on this one. The valve seat and its angles are the bottleneck—you can't afford to mess that up—but turbulence right in front of it isn't ideal either. I didn't build a flow bench, so I can't just gradually remove material and see what happens.

I don't have a Serdi machine, Sad but I do have Wolf valve seat grinding equipment, so I can cut the angles very precisely and keep them sharp.

It’s a slightly more recent version that I’ve refurbished.

Edit:

I’d like to revisit my earlier comment about achieving sharp transitions with grinding stones.
After playing around with the tool for a bit, I’ve realized it’s not ideal; the stones chatter against the seat, and within a blink of the eye, a groove forms in the stone, ruining the flat surfaces.
I got one seat done by turning the stones slowly but it takes forever.

Also, with a 33mm valve, there is practically no room for the 60-degree angle required for a 3-angle valve job. I was only able to create a small chamfer that looks more like deburring than anything else.

A slightly larger valve would solve this.
Some where in a topic I had heard "Dragbike Mike" wanting to usage a valve that was 1mm larger, and now I understand why.

That would allow for a 3-angle valve job and likely let you mill away that casting defect as well.
So, the next step is to look for a larger valve. Does anyone have tips as in were to find them?

I grinding stone should never be in contact with the workpiece along it's full circomference. That is a recipy for disaster as you found out.
In fact, I tend to think that one is better off having the seats done by a professional cylinder and head service. But if you insist on doing it by hand, even using the standard mill-type cutters, be prepared for a learning experience, and for that, a broken head is invaluable to experiment with.

As for the valves, Honda CB350 inlet valves fit well, and the standard ones are 34mm.
You can get them as 1mm oversize = 35mm diametre, here:

I just bought another set from him.
If 35 is too much, you can grind them down to 34mm no problem.

The standard valve seat is 35mm outside, and this may lead to problems, if that is the case, I will have bigger valve seats fitted (by professionals, since they have the liquid nitrogen to shrink them into place)

Thanks for thinking along. This device was made specifically for this purpose, so I think something else is going on. This device dates back to the 1950s and professionals used it daily.

I put some of the grinding stones in the ultrasonic cleaner with a de-greaser. The resin inside the stones may have partially dissolved, perhaps that is why they lose their shape at the slightest chatter.  

I would indeed outsource replacing those valve seats, because if even a bit of aluminum curls up during insertion, the job is ruined.

Thanks for that address on eBay Smiley, I'm going to contact him for a number of valves (probably 2).

I also found an address that has a Chrome Silicon Steel 34.5mm valve with a chrome-plated valve stem. Only the keylocking part doesn't match. The price including shipping works out very low. I'm going to test if I can make that modification on an old valve; that would save a lot of money.

I immediately got behind the lathe to recreate the keyway; the steel is really rock hard.

But I managed to reproduce the shape.It,s not an exact copy but that will come later. Actually, it should be ground into it because the material is so hard, but it does work with a carbide insert and a little effort.

Now that I look closely at the drawing of the eBay valve, my attention is drawn to the dotted line at the end of the valve; it looks as if the end is hollowed out.

Regarding the bowl vs valve ratio, I've had good luck with 87% on my cylinder heads that use 34mm valves.  That works out to 1.170" bowls.  I have used epoxy to fill in the casting flaws just above the seats.  It doesn't last forever, but it generally holds up for at least 10,000 miles if I do a good prep.  I have never tested the flaws to see what impact they have on flow, but I suspect it's not significant.  On some heads, even taking the bowls out to 1.170" won't clean up the casting pockets.

It's next to impossible to determine whether or not your porting is improving or reducing flow without using some sort of test equipment.  It's easy to make a simple flow bench out of ABS pipe.  A couple of shop vacs provide the required differential pressure.  Once you start messing around with a measuring device things get very interesting.  A lot of things you think will improve flow actually surprise you.  If you are interested, I believe I have some old posts on construction of my poor man's flow bench.

The valve grinding stones come in different grades.  Some are general purpose, some are for Stellite, some for extra-hard seats, some for finishing.  Do you happen to know what grade your stones are?  Do you know the thread diameter and pitch on your stone holder?  You should be able to do a nice three-angle valve job with that equipment. What sort of pilot are you using?  Does the stone holder fit tight on the pilot? Does it fit tight in the guide.

The dotted line on the drawing (at the valve stem tip) shows the weld prep for the Stellite inlay.

I personally wouldn't try cutting new grooves for the valve cotters/keepers.  Too much risk of a valve failure.  I have been running the Honda CB350 valves that Finn pointed out.  They are 34mm and just a bit longer than the stock valves.  The additional length has not been a problem.  I probably have at least 90,000 miles on those Honda valves and have not had any issues with valve geometry.

Nice to hear frome you.

I have several stones with the Wolf kit. None of them want to say what type of seating material they are intended for. And believe me, I have tortured them quite a bit.

I use this type of centering shaft: (see picture)

The pitch is +- 1.2mm and the diameter +- 14.29 mm

I have now managed to achieve a neat finish. Instead of using the supplied 16,000  driver or turning by hand, I am now using a cordless drill.
This allows me to still achieve a reasonable machining speed. The chatter is still difficult to avoid, but the stones remain intact now.

There is no play anywhere, not even in the stonedresser. I just overhauled it. Maybe that is the problem, and it needs to have a little play here and there.

I will keep experimenting.

I received a valve this morning, but the shape isn't really right. The radius of the valve is much smaller than the original, and it has no undercut. So the flow will probably be lower.

I don't mind taking a risk by machining the valve. These materials are incredibly strong. I used old valve stems in my forge to cleave hot steel. It was tougher, harder, and much more heat-resistant than any tool steel available.

I have decided not to install larger valves just yet.

I have now made the 45-degree surface the same size as the valve. And I am trying to approximate a 3-angle job as closely as possible.

It is clear that the seat is not centered in the head around the valve stem because the seat is not uniformly thick everywhere.

On the standard head, the valve job consists of 75-45 degrees. A 3-valve job isn't really feasible, but there is still room for improvement by making the seat uniformly thick everywhere and giving it the correct thickness. I think I will go with 0.875 to be able to smooth out any cosmetic flaws I made.

I am going to see if I can build a flow bench and if I still have room for it. We have two vacuums (three, actually), so that should work.
And I will have a look if I can find your topic about your flowbank.

I am not DragBikeMike - and my engine is not built to the same high standards that Mike has achieved in his build.  I am however very satisfied with how well my engine runs - and how well it suits the way I ride.

My porting involved smoothing out the ports - especially the sharp edges where the valve seats protrude into the ports.  I did very little reshaping of the ports - my goal was to make the ports smooth and uniform in the surface texture. I did enlarge the exhaust port exit to the D shape Mike suggested in his porting thread   (I also sandblasted the exhaust port and coated it with Cerakote thermal barrier to reduce the amount of heat transferred to the head in the exhaust port).  I don't have the tools needed to modify the stock valve and seat angles - I did undercut the intake valves a small amount on my lathe.

My engine makes enough power that I seldom need to use full throttle to do anything - I can accelerate quickly enough to keep up with traffic using half throttle.

I believe you will be very satisfied with the results of porting work that cleans up the rough edges, and doing a good job cutting the valve and seat angles.

NOTE:  When I was young I worked in a lawnmower shop after school, and the shop had valve grinding equipment.  My memory is that the white stones are the softest and were used on old engines with cast iron block and no hardened seats - the pink stones were used on hardened seats.

This is precisely why I suggest that you use some sort of measuring tool.  That new valve might actually flow better.  Only way to know for sure is some sort of repeatable test.  The flow bench permits you to always test at exactly the same test pressure.  So, you might find that the new valve flows better across the board, or the new valve might flow better at low lift, or flow better at high lift.  You might find that flow is improved with a narrower back cut rather than a wider back cut.  Sometimes something that looks intuitively obvious is actually not so good, like grinding away at the short-side radius.  It's actually very challenging and also very gratifying when you realize a significant gain without increasing port volume, and with a flow bench you will actually have conclusive evidence that your modifications work.

Look no further, here it is.  The contraption is amazingly simple to construct.  Pretty easy to figure out and use.  Just a bunch of plastic pipe and clear tubing.  The links to DTEC will give you the in-depth info on orifice size, inclined manometer scale, etc.  No need to be very precise since you are simply using the rig to compare your before and after results to see if you are improving your head.  It's not intended to provide precise flow values for comparison to other cylinder heads or advertised flows.

If you are uneasy with the epoxy buildup in the intake port, this old post shows how I tested the product.  I have lots & lots of miles on my current head and the epoxy is still hangin in there.  Haven't found anything suitable for the exhaust port, but the JB Weld High-Heat works great in the intake.  The only area of the intake port where the epoxy doesn't hold up well is the craters just above the valve seats. It seems to disappear from those divots in about 10,000 miles or so, probably because of its proximity to the combustion chamber (heat).  The area I built up along the short-side radius has held up admirably (much cooler there).

Thanks for bringing up the Cerakote thermal barrier; I’ve looked into it, and it seems like a great idea. Did you also coat the intake port so the air absorbs less heat?
I’m quite well-versed in two-stroke tuning, so I want to dive as deep as possible into the potential of this cylinder head to learn about four-strokes. I’ve been reading up on it as if I were preparing to write a thesis. What strikes me is just how much work and investment is required to conjure up an extra 6 hp or so. With a two-stroke, you can get significantly more horsepower out of a 50cc displacement with relatively little effort.Tanks for your input.

I’m going to build a flow bench first.

I checked out the link for the "poor man's" flow bench; it looks atractive. I want to resist the temptation to just slap something together quickly, I want it to look neat.
I also saw David Visart’s design, which features a pressure gauge tube inside the sparkplug hole . In any case, I’m aiming for a digital differential pressure gauge across the orifice; I want to use an Arduino to convert the signal so I can read the CFM figure directly off an LCD screen. (It sounds impressive, though I’ll still have to figure out exactly how to pull that off.)

Those links are excellent and informative; it’s impressive to see how much time you’ve put into this. Thanks for sharing and for the effort you took to gather the links and post them here.

It’s great that you brought up the short side radius; I’ve made a Vinamold cast of the intake port (I have kilos of that stuff lying around).
That lets me see the short radius clearly, and I think there’s room for improvement there. But I’ll tackle that using the flow bench. (And your drawing  Wink)  It’ll probably take a month or so to get the FB finished, il post photo,s .

I did not coat the intake port or the backside of the intake valves - I though that the cool air coming in would help cool the engine down, and that was more important to me than getting ultimate power.  I did coat the combustion chamber side of the intake valves to help keep the intake valves cooler.

I also did not coat the combustion chamber portion of the head.....maybe that would be a good idea as well.

I have not found anyone that has actually done testing on the Cerakote to prove how well it works.  The only testing I have ever seen is folks with torches showing the difference between coated/uncoated pistons.

My engine ran cooler when I installed the piston and coated head - but DragBikeMike found the flat top piston alone reduced the running temperature below what he experienced with the Pop Top piston.
