Oil cooler and MurraysCarbs

I currently own a 2005 Savage and was wondering if anyone out there has installed an oil cooler on their Savage? If so, could you direct me to the seller of an oil cooler, also providing specific instructions for installation.
Also , I’ve been rejetting my bike twice now and to be honest, I’m sick and tired of hassling with the stock CV carburetor (I’m 76 years old and I just can’t bend like I used to in my younger years). I’m considering buying a pre- jetted Mikuni from Murray’s Carbs. If anyone out there has made the switch to these carbs and  could you briefly describe your experience with the Murray Carb and overall communication with this dealer? Thanks ahead of time for any helpful input.

Check DragBikeMike's technical library on the oil cooler.  He also has a carb comparision in his library.

I've had a Murray Carb on one of my Savages.  Yes, easier to play with than the stock CV carb.  Lancer also sells the Mikuki VM36 or VM38 that Murray sells.  Murray is a pretty grumpy old guy.  Lancer is a good guy and he's here on the forum.  Murray and Lancer jet them somewhat differently.

I can’t find my old post about re-jetting the Murray carb, but he installs a much smaller main jet and larger pilot jet than Lancer.

Murray: 165 main and 27.5 pilot
Lancer: 180-200 main jet and 20 pilot

All other components were the exact same.

I kept the Murray’s 27.5 pilot and changed up to a 200 main jet.  I had a freer flowing exhaust (unknown brand, turn out style).  I could have gone with a 190 main and it probably would have been better.

If you want a budget carb, a PWK38 works well (Keihin knockoff from Amazon).  It requires the same fitment modifications that the Mikuni VM36 needs (air box tube or carb mounted filter, cable mod or replace).

Here's a thread with my play by play installing the PWK38.  Nice mixer for $40ish.

The Savage was a low production motorcycle, and things like Oil Cooler kits are not made by anyone.

Why do you believe you need an oil cooler?  We have lots of members in Texas and Arizona that ride in hot weather and haven't cooked their engines.  Youzguyz in the Austin, Texas area is approaching 250,000 miles on his bike!

I am not sure why you are having trouble jetting the stock carb.  For lower elevations the #150 main and #50 Pilot, and replacing the white plastic needle spacer with three machine screw washers is all the changes you need.  At higher elevations you can drop a main jet size to a #145 and perhaps add another washer on the needle.  Most can get the jetting right in just one or two swaps.  If you replace the float bowl screws with allen head screws you can drop the float bowl with the carb in place and make main and pilot jet changes.

Thanks guys for your input; I truly appreciate all of your information.
Regarding the oil cooler… I just thought it could add some extra life to this big one-lunger. The Mikuni round slide carb. is one that I’m very familiar with from previous bikes; it has been always a “step-up “ from the various CV carbs I’ve encountered in the past. Thanks again guys for all of your helpful  suggestions.

Thumper Paul: could you please tell me how I could contact Lancer. I’d really like to try his Mikuni carb set-up. (I couldn’t locate him in the member- search department). Thanks again for your assistance.

Lancer has his performance parts listing pinned at the top on “The Marketplace”.  Link below.  I think you need 10 posts or comments to Private Message him, so leave a comment and he should reply.  I’ll poke him in a PM and let him know you are interested.  His setup is a complete “kit” - carb, a few extra jets, cable, air filter.

He can guide you on the jetting for your location and any mods you might have.  For stock, I’d try 20 pilot jet, 190 main jet, and e-clip in the middle groove on the needle.
