Here, they were only called the LS650. I very much prefer a designation over a name. As to Savage; there is nothing savage about it.

Define Savage.

LS650 is the model designator chosen by Suzuki, I think LS means “Lazy Single”, when compared with the DR650.  😎

In this instance I take the word Savage to mean the term for a native Indian of North America, the headdress on the tank of the Savage branded bikes confirms that.

I think name Suzuki Savage was chosen because it rolls nicely off the tongue, much nicer than than the gay sounding Suzuki Boulevard

Boulevard is a terrible motorcycle name, I agree. A lot of motorcycles have weird or bad names IMO.. I had a sportster 48 but the official model name was XL1200X. Granted they had a system to it. . Not just Harley Either. I had a V-star and A Road Star. Don't confuse it with the Royal Star, which I helped someone sell.

The preferences of Norwegians and people with ginger hair are of no consequence.

On the other hand, I'll always associate the word "savage" as it was used by homosexual characters decades ago, to describe unrestrained and excessive sexual activity, so much so that one friend back then adopted, the single word, pronounced with an extreme lisp, as an over the top gay joke.

And, there was that long running column "Savage Love", written by Dan Savage, the gay activist.

But, I imagine that folks living in less progressive communities would never have heard of any of that.

Of course, "boulevard" is of french origin, and therefore also a little suspect for those with easily disturbed gender identies.

The Japanese don't seem particularly adept at picking marketing brand names that work well in the English language.   I think it could be a LOT worse than either of those names:
