Bike Stalling, Only Able To Run in PRI
08/12/24 at 14:34:11
It's been slowly getting worse. Started out as 2nd, 3rd gear popping and hesitating, then worse when after 5 mins but sputters to a stop. Luckily, I can drive it in PRI. At first I though Petcock, but I replaced that ~5k ago. Am I missing something?

It could still be the petcock valve, but did you check the vacuum line for holes, rips, tears, and a tight connection at the carb and petcock valve nipples?
Sounds like its not sucking.

Ok, just checked, seemed fine. I got the fat tube going from Petcock to carb, thin tube going from R to L side, and 2 vaccuum lines one on either side, going away from the front of the bike. That seem right? The thin tube isn't real tight on there, has a spring clip but that's not tight at all.

I don’t have a stock carb and I don’t remember the exact vacuum line connections. That said, you do have the big vacuum line routed to the petcock valve correctly. ANY vacuum leak will cause performance problems. Fix the loose vacuum line and report back.

Welp, changed the vaccuum hose and still stalling. Although I rode it around my neighborhood switching from PRI to regular and it seemed to run a bit longer than usual on regular. I'm thinking maybe I have some junk on that screen on the Petcock. That's what it was last time. Just puzzles me as to why it doesn't last more than 4k.

That's probably it if it's happened before. Have you tried cleaning the gas tank?

Eh I just ran some Chem 12 carb cleaner in it. I'll drain it and clean it out when the Petcock comes. I was figuring on draining, rinsing with a little gas, draining, and install Petcock. Anything else?

Dave published a great post about gas tank cleaning. I can’t find it. Maybe Dave will chime in and can share a link.
One of the steps is using dry walls screws shaken around in the tank to knock off loose rust. I can’t remember if he uses gas or water in this step to shake around with the screws. I use cleaning vinegar in this step.
When you pull the tank and petcock, look for evidence of rust (the filter screens on the petcock valve will be a stained rusty red color). You gotta get any loose rust out of the tank or it will keep clogging up.
Here’s a pic of a nasty rusty mess I cleaned up on a different bike. I doubt yours is this bad, but it gives you an idea.

Here’s the mess that came out after shaking around some dry wall screws and vinegar for 2 days. During awake hours, shake the tank in every direction every 20-30 minutes until your arms fall off. This is from a bike that sat up about a year with minimal gas in the tank. Tomato soup!
Since you’ve been running okay and going like 4,000 miles between incidents, there is no way yours is this bad.

Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned the gas tank, you may want to use a tank sealer like POR-15. I’ve never used it, but I have used Ospho as my final step.

When using the Evaporust I have found that setting the tank in the sun and letting it get really warm does speed up the rust removal process. Cold temperatures really slow it down....and at 60 or below it seems to stop.

Ok, silly question: Where do you guys dump your old gas? I called my Town Hall and checked with the local Firestone, but nobody knows. Be nice if there was a place.

I live in a rural farming area - some things are far simpler here.
I dump my old gas on the weeds in my gravel in front of the pole barn. It kills the weeds really well. I don't just dump it all at once - I pour a little bit on each one! It works far faster than those store bought weed killers.
