No starter relay or decomp click
05/05/24 at 11:58:53

Was hoping for first start up today.  Fully charged good battery, light comes on, horn and signals work.  Kill switch in the right position.  Tried with the side stand down and up.

No starter relay click or decomp click.  I’m guessing it’s the starter relay.  Will the decomp click even if the starter relay won’t click?  I’m thinking no.

Edit: Fuses are good.  Changed 1 cuz it was getting funky.  Cleaned, dielectric grease applied.

You may want to check the fuses, we only have two, there's a main fuse that powers pretty much everything (lights, signals, handlebar switches) and there's a decomp specific fuse that just does the decomp/starter.

If I remember correctly the way the bike is powered, current goes from the battery through this fuse to the decomp and starter -- my thinking would be the main culprits are the decomp fuse, the decomp controller relay or one of the interlocks (clutch, side stand) both clutch and side stand can be bypassed if needed.

Thanks Philly.  I'm reading through Och's recent post when he was having the same "no start" problem. No click at the relay or decomp.  Light comes on, taillight stays on, headlight dims when you hit the start button.

I'll try to clutch jump wire trick tomorrow.  I still have a gut feeling it's the starter relay.  I hate electrical problems.

Yes it will because the signal comes from a controller independent of the starter.

So, if the decomp is not clicking over, then it's upstream of the controller.

pull the clutch safety plug and check for 12v from 1 of the wires to ground when you push the starter button.

Thanks Verslagen.

I pulled the plug.  Do I jump the 2 female connectors together?  Not the male connectors in the clutch perch "switch assembly".

The pin that goes against the clutch lever was out of alignment.  I straighted it our and tightened the screw.  And then tried to start again.  No luck.

I do want to make sure I'm jumping the right female connectors.

I will try your test too.

Thanks Verslagen and Philly!

It was the darn clutch safety switch!  It started fantastic within 1-2 seconds after I MacGyvered it.  Like bam!

Now I have to decide if I want to bypass it permanently or buy a new switch.
