Front Brake Pads Dead
11/21/23 at 14:20:15

I decided to look at other things on Woody today.  Seems Woody ran right out of his brake shoes.  Has anybody else seen brake pads separate like this?  The pad portion still has 4-5mm of life left, but they decided they don't like being attached to the plates.  I started to pull the pin and the pads hit the floor.  These are EBC brakes (about $30 a set).  Glad I replaced with some el cheapo Niche semi-metallic for $10 a set.

I had exact the same problem with EBC brakes, they are garbage, at least for the Savage. I have since bought a big brake kit, huge improvement.

Yikes. I've never seen that before. Worn down to metal yes, but not that. I currently have a different brand on mine but I'll be darned if I can remember the name at the moment.

Springman - you left yourself a clue in your signature line (Valor brake pads).

considering the amount of rust, he must park it knee deep.

The EBC organic brake pads are very good pads for the Savage....they are black in color.  They last a long time, don't make a lot of dusty mess, and they are not prone to squealing....they are a big improvement over the stock pads.

The EBC pads that are orange in color are sintered metal and they don't seem to work very well on the Savage....the compound is a bit too hard and they just don't grab very well.

Those rusty things that ThumperPaul had on his bike.......that is not anything normal - that is some serious rust!

That looks like rust-jacking to me.   Its specialty is ruining close relationships.

I had the orange ones, when they fell apart they were maybe a year old. They didn't have as much rust as Paul's, but did have some rust. Before they fell apart, the brake feel was terrible, big brake kit made a day and night difference.

Either way, I was about to hop on the bike to run some errand, as I noticed something suspicious on the ground, and upon closer inspection it was the brake pad.

I was running the orange pads before switching to the black -- I agree the orange semi-sintered are junk. Pathetic lifespan, bad braking (although our brakes are pretty sad anyway).

Organic pads are the best pads to use on the Savage....they grab well and don't wear out the disc quickly.  I have never seen anybody have any trouble with them coming apart.......they just wear out and you need to replace them when there is no pad left.

I believe sintered pads work better on bikes with large diameter rotors where the speed of the disc across the pad is much higher than on the Savage, and more heat is built up....it could also be that the brake cylinder applies more pressure onto the pad.  Sport bikes use sintered pads as they are much more tolerant of heat.  Perhaps the metal in the friction material has some sort of galvanic action going on with the steel packing plates when the bikes are stored outside and exposed to the weather.

Just use organic pads and you won't have any trouble......EBC pads are on all my bikes and I have never had any trouble with them.
