Forgiving Loans
07/07/23 at 14:16:30

From, 'The New York Times'

One of the most significant developments in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election has emerged largely under the radar. From 2016 to 2022, the number of white people without college degrees — the core of Donald Trump’s support — has fallen by 2.1 million.

Over the same period, the number of white people who have graduated from college — an increasingly Democratic constituency — has grown by 13.3 million.

I think the tax payer "footing the bill" is inevitable in some way.

For instance one program that would be cut to account for student loan forgiveness is Paid Parental Leave.  My tax dollars, in some capacity will end up in one of those programs.

So should I pay for someone that chose to have a kid, or someone that chose to go into debt for an education?

I feel like I shouldn't pay for anyone else's choices on either of these issues.

You f’ing socialist leftist do a lot of ridiculous things, but “canceling” student debt is the worst.

First, no one’s canceling anything. We’re paying for it. The lending institutions and schools get paid, the students get their education (debatable) and I get money taken out of my pocket so 20 year olds, who haven’t experienced much in the way of real life yet so overwhelmingly vote Democratic, cast their votes the way they’ve been paid off to do. You want to help those struggling? Pay off all car loans for those making less than 50k or something like that. Now that would help an awful lot of people but those people don’t vote 90% for Democrats so fxxk ‘em.

Cancelling a Trillion dollars of tax debt for the rich (including that huge $750 that tRump pays) ain't free either.
Somebody's got to pay that.
It's you.

Would you rather help pay someone's education, or make a payment on their luxury yacht?

I think that when you borrow something you have to pay it back. It also motivates people to start a good career.

There is also an advantage to alleviating student debt. Now our most intelligent people choose a profession that allows them to pay off their student debt quickly. For example the money sector.

This is at the expense of sectors where these intelligent people can make a lot of abiding contributions to society.

It would be nice if bright policymakers got involved. Instead of unleashing nonsensical ideologues or old-fashioned ideas on this.

“… people paid their loans for 25 years, but only 7 of those years counted because of an accounting error.   …”

So, someone paid back the amount required over 25 years.
And NEVER checked the balance ?

This person went to COLLAGE, and is (supposedly) Intelligent ?

This person has NO record of  making payments ?

Sure, someone in the government, f’ed up,  (NOT a new thing)
The fix is simple, ‘Here is the Proof I paid’,

And again from a Favorite FDS, WOKE Site, NPR
https://www.npr.org/2023/07/14/1187545921/student-loan-forgiveness-save-repay...
“… The Supreme Court may have struck down President Biden's plan for sweeping student loan forgiveness, but another plan that could gradually achieve similar results is in the works. In fact, millions of borrowers can begin to benefit from it as early as this fall, when they're expected to begin making monthly loan payments after a three-year pause.
Now, this forgiveness isn't simple. It won't happen suddenly, in one lump sum. It will instead come slowly through a complex new repayment plan — called the SAVE plan, for Saving on a Valuable Education — that will save borrowers thousands of dollars by keeping their monthly payments small (as small as $0) while also preventing interest from exploding what they owe.
"[It] has the potential to massively change student loan repayment in our country as we know it," says Dominique Baker, an associate professor of education policy at Southern Methodist University.
SAVE is a new form of income-driven repayment plan that the Department of Education says will phase out the current Revised Pay As You Earn plan (REPAYE).
If this doesn't sound like loan forgiveness, get this:
The department says that under the old plan, borrowers repaid $10,956 for every $10,000 they borrowed. Under the new plan, they would pay back just $6,121 …”

Just to note. You buy a House for 300,000.00, 10,000.00 down, then ‘BORROW’, 290,000.00 at 5% for 30 years.
You will pay 270,000.00 in INTEREST.  Total  560,000.00

But the NEW plan, you BORROW, 10,000.00 you pay BACK, $6,121.00

I WANT SOME OF THAT !!!!!!!!!
BORROW, 10,000.00, and ONLY PAY BACK 2/3’s of it !!!!!!!!

Incorrect.  The amount is not the issue, its that the deal that was made was after 25 years, the rest is forgiven.  They didn't know the payments, made in full, weren't counted towards the 25 year payment agreement.

Also the sentence you quote is not about the SAVE plan.

The payments aren't the issue, the credit towards the 25 year agreement was not counted.  Not the dollars, the years.  It's like having an agreement to work at a job for 10 years and they pay off your school loans, but after 8 years the Company says OOPS, we didn't count the first 5 years towards your time because your paperwork was entered incorrectly, so we won't pay off your school like we agreed.

Nobody is questioning you worked 8 years already, they are just backing out of the deal you had with them.  If the deal was "unconstitutional" then it should have been addressed 25 years ago.

I think if it were "simple" then people would have been resolving the issue by now.  Problem is you can't just show the government some receipts and get your loan forgiven.
