I think I killed it. The ride a few days ago , my rear brake gave me a “ OK I’ve had enough “ groan really bad pulling into the fruit stand. I think it’s time to start collecting parts to repair/replace/rebuild. Real short ride today to verify its passing. I must have roasted it , sounds similar to a EV that metal dragging on metal sound. I know it’s not metal on metal unless the lining crumbled to dust , not likely. Big brake up front is used to covering rear brake or lack there of. I’m listening if anyone has a solution other than replacing rear hub/brake. I have a few ideas.

Hay Ruttly

It might be a good time to go Cast Wheel and Tubeless ?    Or just new brake shoes  ??  Huh

Ebay is full of Suzuki parts .  Wink

...............

One of my Crazy Cousins had his old Yamaha (125cc two cycle single) rear brake shoes so worn out that the flat expander flapped over and the brake petal drug the ground till he got stopped one time.
After that he just drug his feet when he wanted to stop .   Grin
He went through two pair of cheep gym shoes a week for a while.
His front brake cable was broken and he refused to put any money into the bike ... one day the muffler outer shell rotted off and he kept driving it till a sheriff patrol pulled him over for being too noisy ... then he finally parked it and got an old truck.   True story from long ago !  Mom said he was her brothers first son ... but I'm not totally sure he was really my cousin  Embarrassed   ?

I got some eBay junk parts to coming to try something different. I already have a new set of grooved EBC shoes on the shelf , maybe 2 sets. The rear brake is more difficult operate but go the other way it is way easier. So cam must be to blame or brake was intended to operate the other way. So l will see what I can come up with. Put something together that works better than stock can’t be too tough , this drum brake is bottom of the barrel of quality. So while I was searching for parts I found this , a drum to hyd.disc kit that fits your drum brake , keep your rear wheel. A pre bled system , bolt-on and I suspect some fabrication required , spacers & brake anchor & mount res. and the BLS. Need to measure my rear axle before I email them with my order. Think it’s in Europe somewhere. Remmotorcycle Co.
A early Christmas present from me to my tracker , “loud evil laughter” !  Grin

Both finding a cheap effective solution and disc brake solution are important to me , last winter I had Buchanan’s build me a new rear wheel. It wasn’t nowhere near cheap , but it is beautiful. Remmotorcycle’s website showed the kit I need is not available , I will email them in the morning. While I’m waiting  I’ll see if I can make something work on the cheap. I’m just hard on the bike and probably should inspect the front too. They were 30 year old oem linings , maybe they did turn to dust.

Brake backing plate also needs some cooling. Some sort of an air scoop made from aluminum or stainless steel , some thing prefabbed if I get lucky. So a scoop on top side and 2 or 3 holes on bottom side for exit holes. Just simple air flow will help cool the brake. Also going to try another cam with different profile. And also moving brake cam lever will point up rather than down towards ground , I will explain why later after it gets tested. Using a stock backing plate to modify for better cooling , removing heat , brake dust & gases created by friction process. I’ll post what works & if I fail we can all have a laugh. My BSA 250 has drum brakes f & r ( Comical Hubs ) that everyone hates. Well I learned a lot about drum brakes on that bike and I’m gonna use what I learned on this Savage. Just want a predictable lockup from this brake. Undecided

New to California is a super speeders law. Get caught at 100 mph or over , get arrested , loose your license. Unclear if it timed penalty or permanent loss of driving privilege ! I’m sure there is hella fines rolled into all that too ! The department of motor vehicles will have a board that will be judge , jury & hangman to oversee each case. Well Ruttly likes being prepared , the F100 with its 131 h/p & 4 speed , tires are rated to 75 mph , I can’t see her breaking our 65 mph speed limit so I’m good there. Used to be troubling why the tracker was unable to do the ton , just gearing. I would rather better acceleration than top speed. Her gps recorded many 92 mph runs. But I haven’t done a speed run with new taller rear tire , so max maybe 93 mph. Not saying I’m not a speeder cause I can’t help myself at times , it makes me feel alive at speed , adrenaline surging and everything gone from my brain , can no longer hear the engine , focusing any fears aside. Still feels great at 92 mph. I hear you chuckling Dave ! I’m still subject to tickets & fines but feel just out of reach from the new law. Cool

I am not a fellow that regularly breaks the traffic laws - there are times when I just can't follow slow cars going 35mph on 55mph curvy roads and will pass on the double yellow lines when it is safe to do so.  The Savage can easily pass the slow cars when necessary.

I am not laughing at your 92mph.....the Savage engine is just not built for speed.  The torque however is wonderful and riding the bike on curvy mountain roads is where the engine really feels at home - the torque just pulls you out of the corners willingly.  (Soon I hope to post a YouTube video of my bike on a local road - it will show why I don't need an engine with great top end......just smooth torque in the 3,000-4,000 rpm range).

I have not done any speed runs on my bike since I have installed the new 94mm Wiseco Flat top and modified my exhaust to be a bit less restrictive - it does feel like it wants to run and it does make good power when I roll on the throttle.  The abradable coating on the skirt does seem to provide for less piston rattle.

When I did a couple of speed runs with my previous Wiseco 95mm the bike gets to 80mph in short order - the next 10mph comes less briskly, and the final 10mph seems like it takes a very long time and it takes a lot of highway to get up to the top speed.  My chassis is fine up to 80mph - as it gets close to 100mph it gets really wiggly and scary!  A GPS confirmed 101.1mph was the best it would do - I did it twice and a year apart and the terminal velocity identical both times.  I won't likely be trying this again until I install a set of Bridgestone BT46 tires....they are supposed to help with stability on bikes that are prone to wander.

I had recently put a honest set of mirrors on , great mirrors see everything , no vibration blur. However , running thru the gears , see rushes up to 90mph getting the last few mph slows a bit. Near 80ish the big mirrors start a wobble , can be throttled thru but wobble at 90 it can be scary. I know you installed steering damper for a handling issue. Same issue ? Take off the mirrors it goes away , last set was even worse , wobble started 70. I so wanted to cut and adjust steering head angle , but I was in a hurry , but yet found the time to move left shock in. A huge mistake. 3 sets of different tires , every tire way different , not the tires. Not tire pressure , but always my first suspect. What is the steering head angle on your bike ? I’ll check mine. I’ve got it narrowed down to angle. I was gonna cut out a piece just behind steering head with my sawsall , bit of heat , give it a bend and weld it up. Was going to use steering head angle from my BSA flat tracker. So speed runs mirrors removed , I use a single bar-end mirror , bolts to mirror mount just to be legal , small and almost useless. I guess the bigger mirrors are nice , really ruins the look of the tracker. Try removing your mirrors before your next speed run and see if it feels better at speed.

Does the wander feel like a real slight wave or ripple in roadway ? Almost like front slightly out of balance. Ever so slightly like rim out of round or tire has a high spot. Sorry for twenty questions but our handling issues may be  the same , repairable ? IDK , must ID it. Concerned me that you installed steering damper , so monkey see monkey do I was going to try one too. But it just didn’t seem to be the cure , as it would help with the wobble , but I seek the cause. Back to air pressure. Got a mobile tire inflator about the size of a pound of butter , 1 lb increments , same direction of the same stretch of road , cause I’ll know as soon as it’s gone. But I doubt it’s air pressure but it will make for a fun ride.
