Ammo can mounted to swing arm?
09/29/22 at 11:41:48

In reference to this post: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1378143424/4

I found this ammo can mounted to the swing arm from a post in 2013 by hotrodbobber -- Anyone know how he has this mounted or any suggestions for a simmilar mount? I believe he has it mounted with a single arm from the rear shock but I dont know how he managed to have it stable like that for practical use.

I was thinking I might be able to make an X on the back on a can out of strong steel, with another very strong piece of bent steel stock and a bolt hole for where the belt guard usually sits behind the rear shock -- any thoughts about this?

Looks better than I thought it would. that guy definitely reinforced the back of the ammo can and probably mounted it to the axle.

That thing is gonna get shaken viciously. Every bump launches it,the shocks and springs will be working to shove it down. The added unsprung weight is gonna affect the ride. The heavier the load and box,the weirder it's gonna act.

It's a bobber. Nothing wrong with that,,,,but,,, they have never been known as high mileage bikes.
If someone wants to build a bike the way THEY want fine.
Those of us that ride a lot of miles know it would not last 20 or 30 k, but if someone who does short miles likes the looks,,,go for it.
Ammo cans are cheap, & easy to replace.
I hope he don't carry beers in it! Two miles in there and you would have to let them set a week before you open them.

Reducing unsprung weight improves ride and handling. This box will have I’ll effects.

Here’s how I’d mount it; drive the axle from the exhaust side and have a capture plate inside the box. The nut would get installed and tightened from inside the box.

You may need a bushing to get the proper spacing between box and bike….and that means you will need to have a custom axle made.

Put some martinis in the ammo box and take a short ride. Then serve shaken martinis.

Sounds like the consensus is way too much movement to mount there, Maybe a low bracket from the rear fender  Huh

I'm thinking that skinny little chrome strut that goes to the fender is attached to the swingarm... Which would make attaching something to the fender pretty much the Same as attaching it to the swingarm.

So, probably not the answer.
The mass of a steel box attached to that fender? The constant direction changes would break the fender at the mounts.
If you're going to need to haul stuff I think you're going to have to look up under the seat for a place to weld a bracket to hang something off of. It's going to pretty much screw up the lines of a bobber.
Okay, went and looked at mine. You Could use the shock mounts and the horns under the seat to work from and hang a horizontal tube that would handle a small saddle bag.
Straight down from the shock mounts, then outboard to clear the belt and back, and a support up under the seat to protect the weld at the shock mounts from the cracking forces of a bag hanging out on a pipe, trying to rip the weld off and stabilize the horizontal tube so it doesn't break.
I'm thinking you might want a backpack.
Bobbers just don't lend themselves to being exactly useful for more than
Goin somewhere.
That may be why they typically don't get a buncha miles on them.
They look great, but I can't have one, because I want a bike I can use to go get gas for the mower, groceries, BEER, trip to the hardware store, BEER, You Know,, Stuff..

That stuff is available in the Airline Size bottles. It's The best deal, Evver. A buck apiece. Fifty milliliters for a buck,,do the math,,  fifteen bucks is 750 cc,
I used to keep bourbon, but I'm digging this stuff now
