Spark plug questions and removing head covers?

Happy 4th of July, savages,

I recently installed a raptor petcock -- while I was down there I decided to pull the spark plug to see if there were any signs of what I suspect to be a lean condition. I've attached a picture of the plug -- To my untrained eyes, this looks fine (not sure why it's trump colored, though) does anyone think it looks lean? I'm worried it may be lean due to significant backfiring.

Anyways,

To pull the plug I had to remove those chrome alloy head cover things -- I know some guys like to run the bike without these, as I would like to as  well -- but does anyone know if they DO anything? like, do they help radiate heat and keep the engine somewhat cooler? or are they purely cosmetic? Do they keep the heads clean from debris?

I would say a tad rich, a full grin rich maybe.   Cool

no dbm type proof, just an observation that they will reduce air flow over the top.

Just chrome for yard art

Buy a new plug gap it run it a day or two,then inspect it , NGK , ND
Hard to read a 20 year old plug , old plug doesn’t look too bad

I get that exact coloration when I run octane booster.  Are you running any sort of octane booster?   Are you in Philly?  Do the Sunoco stations still offer all sorts of high-octane grades of gas?  The brown/orange coloration might be from fuel additives used to increase octane.

BTW, your plug looks OK to me.

Hey Mike -- your posts are great -- I'm reading your guide to see what mods will be best for more torque.

Yes in Philly, live in Kensington. I did run an octane booster, but that was quite a few tanks ago -- I wanted to see if it would decrease backfiring. Also ran seafoam. I typically get 93 octane from Wawa.

Synoco does have 94 octane sometimes but not always, used to be more common.

In the FWIW department, the plug sits down in a pocket. Road crud lands in it just waiting for someone pull the plug so it can free itself from its restraints and jump into the cylinder.
Best to inspect and clear the crud outta there.
