Carb valve stuck or normal?
06/24/22 at 02:21:27
hi
My LS 650 1994 won’t start after a break of about 8months.
It Turns over
There is spark
Spark plug is dry
There is fuel to carb from tank
I’ve removed the air filter and tried to lift the throttle valve. It only moves about 5mm. It doesn’t move when the throttle is twisted. Should it?
Cheers
Niall

Remove the carb and clean it. I don’t know your method for lifting the slide, but it should easily move. You’ll discover it’s condition when you clean the carb. If the slide has corrosion, it will need to be replaced. Or maybe you bent the needle trying you lift the slide with too much side force.

Thanks Gary
I’ve ordered a rebuild kit but was just wondering while I wait before stripping the carb. Im just lifting with my finger through the inlet. No pressure applied.
Anyway, from what you say, she should move so I’ll wait until I get into it.

The slide does not move when the throttle is twisted, it responses to air flow.
When the throttle is twisted, a butterfly valve moves.
A stuck slide will not keep it from starting, it just won't go anywhere.
Some countries have a spacer above the slide for learners to limit slide travel.
Your carb is probably gummed up from sitting. Clean it.

I’ve started cleaning (float was definitely sticking too). Out of interest, how much movement would you expect in the slider? 10mm? 5?

I'm sold on using a whiff of ether on starting anything that has been sitting. Saves the battery and starter motor and helps troubleshooting.

Success! It’s freed up. Possibly from leaving for the carb cleaner to get there.
The needle has a 3mm wide circle of a glue like film that stopped it lifting. A bit more cleaning and she should start.
Thanks for all your help!

Next step I’m afraid. After cleaning, it turns out that the float bowl is not filling at all. I’ve removed the floats and the pin in the picture moves as expected.
I’ve also blown compressed air down inlet.
Do I need to remove the piece arrowed?
If so, how does it come out please?

There’s your problem. That rubber piece should be soft, pliable and pointed. Your looks like 3-strikes, so it’s out. Before you reinstall the new float valve, polish the seat with metal cleaner and a q-tip, and also replace the o-ring.

Hi Gary
Which rubber piece do you mean? The gauze end with the white plastic? That plastic was inside and I pulled it out to get to the gunge.
I ordered a repair kit last week as I knew I’d need a gasket at least. It looks like it comes with a valve and seat. However it looks very different to what I’ve just removed:

Will that be ok do you think? It’s supposed to be for all LS650s
