Pick-up coil ??
05/31/22 at 09:56:53

My 05 having some problems and I'm guessing it is the pick-up coil.  Not long ago I replaced the ignition coil and it ran great.  The battery is good and I certain it is not fuel/carburetor related.  It starts like normal then after it gets hot it slowly wants to cut out.  The idle slows down till it will cut off unless you feed it some gas.  Assuming it is the pick-up coil does the repair consist of cracking the left side open and replacing?  I looked and it is not possible to replace the coil, they only offer the entire stator assembly.  Would a coil on ebay/amazon suffice?  Thanks!

Best regards,

Does it sound like its missing?  Like a stumble in the idle then it dies?

The idle normally falls when it gets hot.  Not to question what youve already done, but I assume the idle is high enough?  The float bowl is set correctly?

If the timing was auto retarding and slowing the idle it would probably always run bad, not just when hot.  And if it was cutting out because of the heat, it would stumble and miss when  its running.

Hows the plug look?

A pulse thats missing on a single cylinder engine is usually pretty apparent.  There isnt a 2nd point and cylinder doing ok to move things along.

But yeah looks like that loom is wired together.

You can find replacements much cheaper on fleabay.

I dont think a generic one would mount the same. The distance is probably pretty tight and if the location of the signal point was off a little bit its going to jack up your timing.

The wiring for the sensor and the generator run thru a plug together and while you might be able to pull the wires out, you got connectors to deal with too.

the sensor is a simple voice coil.  the FSM does not say what the resistance of the coil should be, but it should be something indicating that it's continuous and it should not be shorted to ground.

Thanks to all who replied.  When it starts it runs great, real good.  Once it gets hot it feels a little weaker, then the description above is accurate.  Aftermarket rapture petcock, everything else should be good as well.

How about a new aftermarket stator assembly?

I'm halfway in the old S40 to replace the stator & pick-up coil.  Do you have to remove the battery housing or anything else to get the new stator cable where it needs to go to plug in?  Thanks

I have one of those pickups that I got from Dennis Kirk.  I will try to dig it up and measure resistance.  Will also check the fit in a spare alternator cover.  Will post the results.

IMO, your description doesn’t sound like a pickup problem, but who knows.

I dug through my parts and found the DK inductive pickup.  Part number is on the box.

Looks identical to the stock pickup except I think the wire colors are different.  Don't know if the system is polarity sensitive.  Maybe another forum member has the down-low on that.

It fits the alternator cover but don't know if it will have correct clearance with the alternator rotor.  That's easy to figure out once you have the cover off.

It must have correct clearance with this metal strip that is welded to the O.D. of the rotor.  That strip's length and location allow the igniter unit to figure out where the ignition advance needs to be and when to fire the plug.

You can do a crude clearance check using tape.  Start applying take to the strip on the rotor.  Install the cover.  Rotate the engine one turn.  Remove the cover.  Check for a rub on the tape.  Once the pickup starts to rub on the tape you know approximately how much clearance you have.  Just measure the thickness of the layers of tape.  Mine was about .055" and it's working good.

The Dennis Kirk pickup has 204.3 ohms resistance.  When a put a piece of steel onto the pickup magnet, the resistance changes momentarily and then settles back to 204.3 ohms.  Probably not a good practice to latch the steel onto the magnet with the ohm meter hooked up since it most certainly induces a current.  Maybe not a big deal.

I measured the resistance on the stock pickup but it was a long time ago.  Not sure where that nugget of golden data is buried.  If I find it I will share.

Good luck.
