Tips for removing stuck float needle retaing screw
05/08/22 at 14:19:13

Its stuck real good. partially stripped already. I removed it fine a few yrs ago, but the bike has sat and is all gummed up. So gummy that with the float removed the needle wouldn't even come out with prying it out.
In the past I have had good luck with using wire cutters to bite into the screw head, but this one is bad.

I had the same issue with all the screws in my carb. An assortment of different sized vice grips got most of them. But the really tough ones got a new slotted head with my dremel tool and removed with a big-ass screwdriver. One of them got very carefully and slowly drilled out with smaller to larger bit sizes until I could get the remnants of the screw out of the hole. Best of luck to ya! I never found the "trick" and just chipped away at them (figuratively not literally!)

After googling around I found the chisel method.

It worked.
but the part the needle fits into is stuck tight. I think it should just pull out, not threaded. I'm soaking it in PB Blaster overnight.

An impact driver works every time. To properly use an impact driver, you have to preload the handle. Most people just smack the handle, which doesn’t transfer any torque.

Replace the screws with SS cap screws. I think they are M3.

Stainless screw to replace brass in Carb?

My hardware store has no Brass Metric small machine screws. They have the perfect size in stainless. Can I use stainless or will there be some sort of Galvanic reaction?

When I said SS above, that stands for Stainless Steel. You will not suffer galvanic corrosion with SS hardware…that’s why it is used.

Cap screws are used because the Allen head allows for a better purchase than Phillips.
