Oil leak
11/17/21 at 17:25:15

Hello all. So as I was putting my exhaust back on, I noticed an oil leak from the front of the cylinder. It looks like it's leaking out the bottom of a nut surface. I posted a picture. Is this an easy fix. Can someone link a tutorial perhaps?

Thanks in advance

Very common. Take the nut & washer off, clean as good as you can. Apply some high heat gasket sealer, re-tighten nut ( with a 1/4'' drive rachet and no extension, or short box end wrench you DON'T want to strip it ) Let it cure overnight, warm it up and tighten again, and you should be good to go. Won't hurt to check once and a while.

I agree with Badwolf....mostly.

However once I have applied the sealer I tighten the nut down with a wrench - and I tighten it pretty snug using one hand.  You are trying to duplicate a torque setting of 23-27 ft./lbs without using a torque wrench.

Are you sure that's not in-lbs?

this is the nut under the head in front of the bike, not the case bolts.
I'm pretty sure it's ft-lbs.

Hey dave, does applying rtv qualify as installing wet?

Not trying to challenge mechanics who I consider better.
What I have read recently has made me think that if I want rtv to solve a problem I would be ahead to clean everything and dose it up, give it time to start to cure, bring it into contact, but not squeeze it out, then let it Cure, then torque it.

I honestly don't know if that is correct.
Sux being this old and still trying to figure stuff out.

I think that letting the RTV start to cure and then tighten it down later makes sense on flat surfaces that are just going to squeeze tighter together - but on a rotating nut I believe the RTV will shear and roll around and the seal will be ruined.

On those nuts.....I put it on right out of the tube and torque it down.  That has always sealed the leak for me.

And yes the torque value is ft./lbs.  The stud is 8x1.25 and takes a 13mm wrench.....it holds the head and cylinder together and squeezes on the head gasket - it needs to be tight!
