Maximum speed/RPM??
08/08/21 at 20:04:50

Good evening,
What kind of speed should I be looking at at the top of his gear? On a 2000 Suzuki Savage 650? Also RPM range. As my bike does not have a tachometer and I’m new to this motorcycle. It just sounds like I am screaming doing 60 miles an hour….Just returned the motorcycle stock. It sounds like I’m doing 15,000 RPMs and 50 year LOL at 70

Your engine is not turning nearly as fast as you think it is. Look at DBM's evolution of a hotrod thread to see just how choked that engine is in stock form. You can't rev it anywhere close to high enough to hurt it in 5th gear. As for top speed, typically it will be about 85mph indicated, give or take a few mph.

The speed chart that used to be posted was on Tinypic, and the company no longer exists......therefore the chart is lost.

However - the following was pulled from that thread and provides the RPM at 60mph for the 5 speed transmission.

Stock 5-speed, 140/80-15: 4008 rpm      (130/90-15 will be similar)
Stock 5-speed, 140/90-15: 3831 rpm

If you decide to run 70+ mph for extended periods, check the oil level on a regular basis.  Sustained speeds tend to cause oil loss on the Savage.  The bike can run at these speeds without damage or excessive wear - provided you keep the oil level up.

Thank you, I think when I get home from work today I’ll take her for a spin with my handy-dandy lawnmower tach and see what it does.. Grin

These cheap little guys off fleabay work sufficiently. Have one on my bike permanetly. Ground off the mounting tabs and used heavy-duty velcro to attach it to the backside of the oil reservoir so it is visible while riding.

I guess today is our lucky day.  I found these charts in my files.  I hope they are the lost charts Dave is talking about.  Sorry for having four separate pages, only way a low-tech dude such as myself can post the stuff.  If they have any value, suggest you folks do a "save-as" and capture these jpeg files.

Here's Chart 1.

DragBikeMike:

Yep, those are the charts that I was referring to!

I am glad you saved copies.  My entire bike build thread was ruined when TinyPic shut down their service.

Man thanks a bunch! So by that rationale, 6500 will be red line?

Man if these charts are correct which I think they are, I’ve been riding this thing like grandma. I guess it must be my exhaust set up, but she’s Rollin.

When a stock engine reaches 6,500 rpm - it feels like it is running out steam!  The engine will rev that high - but it doesn't pull hard all the way to the red line.  Beyond 4,500 rpm the engine feels like it wants you to shift. (It feels that way to me........your mileage may vary).
