Broken swingarm!
06/22/21 at 15:13:48

Doing some stuff on the bike getting ready for a trip over the 4th, and saw the swingarm is cracked more than halfway around just behind the rear footpeg mount hole on the left side!
Has anyone else broken a swingarm, or heard of someone who has?
Looks like the quick fix is to swap it with the one off my 06'.
Guess I'll be turning wrenches for a while this week.

That’s an unusual failure for sure. Luckily it’s a fast swap. Be sure to grease the bearings and pivot bolt on reassembly.

I have never heard of a broken swingarm on the Savage before this one.

Even Youzguyz with 212,000 miles riding across cattle guards has not broken a swingarm!

I've only heard of one... on a sidecar rig.

I cracked one in the same spot but on the right side.  This bike was an 86 and went through hell, I rode it over a lot of dirt and bumps.

None of my other bikes ever had this issue, but I do check now just in case.

I  swaped the swingarm for one off a 13'. ($30 w/shipping - ebay)

I rubbed a lumber crayon in the crack to make it show. Starts at the weld for the rear footpeg mount and goes up and around the top, and the same around the bottom. The backside was all that was holding!
Glad I spotted and fixed it BEFORE my trip to the KSL over the 4th. Don't want to think about it breaking 700 miles from home, or 7 miles either!
As compared to most other major parts it was a pretty painless fix.

I was testing out a hitch carrier that I put on the back of my van.  As I was strapping the bike down I noticed this:

I think we have something more for ALL of us to check for once and a while!

How many miles on yours? ( mine is 129k )
Mine is solo only, strictly pavement.
Do you ride solo or double most of the time? Off road Moto?

(I will skip the fat chick joke.)

Seems odd it would break there, not near the shock mount. Do we need a engineer to analyze it?
Dave, are you listening?

Solo, 250lbs, no off road, maybe a tiny RR track jump or two, and I've lost track of my speedos, but I should be around 20k-25k.  30k max but the more I think about it I should be closer to 20k.  It was a really clean 96 with ~3500 miles on it when I got it. (Unless the previous owner disconnected or swapped the speedo.)

Luckily, I have a spare.
