Rear Heat Shield & Rear Brake Line Clearance
06/29/08 at 06:26:23

Hi,

How much clearance do you have between the rear heat shield and the rear brake line. I was looking my new ride over yesterday, and noticed that the rear brake line is rubbing/melting on the rear heat shield. I'm tempted to remove the shield, or go back to the dealership and look at the other LS650's to see if it's a feature on all of them... Page 162 Image 62 of the Clymer makes it look like it's a feature...

Here's a couple of pictures:

TIA!

EDIT: Added another Macro picture...

On my '07 the brake cable is a good 1/2" away from the heat shield. No sign of any heat problems and I've got 4000 kms on the bike.

Take it back to the dealer.

Has this issue been resolved? I just noticed my rear brake cable is rubbed just about half way through. 2014 with 1000 miles on it.
Ok, simple, loosen clamp on heatshield and rotate away from brake cable. Nope, after a little investigating it appears that the whole muffler needs to rotate.

You can see where the interference is.

my 06 brake cable goes under the crankcase and then up and under the swingarm to the rear drum lever  There is at least one inch of clearance between cable and any exhaust fittings
Something wrong with your setup methinks

Problem solved, just needed to rotate the muffler which moved the heat shield away from the brake cable.
I pulled the whole system apart so I could rotate the muffler clamp thanks to DragBikeMike's tip
"Tip 1:  The muffler clamp bolt is really humbug to access when the head of the bolt faces up.  Turn the clamp over so the bolt head faces down.  Then you can easily access from underneath the muffler.  You will have to bend an orientation tab flat but it’s very easy to do."
The brake cable is worn down steel core to it but I probably wont swap it out until it starts to get rusty
