cast wheels & tubeless

I hate m/c tubes!!! Last weekend I had a slow leak in my front tire, put in some fix a flat (NOT RECOMENDED) and made it home (850 miles) with 2 blow ups. Turned out to be a fold in the tube formed a crack, AFTER 20,000 MILES!
So I decided to go full tubeless. Bought a front wheel on ebay from a 82' gs850 19 1.85" to match my rear 16 2.50" both "tubeless tire applicable".
So with both wheels in hand I will show the difference.

First the rim says "tubeless tire applicable* DUH!

Now here are the two rims, the gs850 rim is on the right, the other is from a early 80's Suzuki 450. They look almost the same, but the 450's rim is NOT made to go tubeless,

Here are the two profiles side by side. Tubeless on the right.

This is the tube type, notice the narrow shoulders to seat the bead and rounded center channel

This is the tubeless profile, wider shoulders for the bead to seat, and a squared off channel.
So if you want to go tubeless, now you know what to look for. If the listing does not show the writing on the rim, look at the profile.
The 82' gs850 rear wheel is a match for the drive hub and the brake, you might have to adjust the spacers thou.
The front, again you might need to adjust the spacers, BUT, the brake disc is different! So you WILL have to make a adapter plate for the caliper.

That's the GS650 or 850 ?  Huh

Thanks for the Write-up .   I might be using the "Round profile"  and living dangerously ???   I'll have to check .  Smiley

I have the same wheels, from an "83-85 GS550L.  Rear is a direct slip-on, 5 minutes tops.  Also, 120/90-16 is all the rear tire anyone needs, almost same diameter as stock.
Cheers!  Cool

Thanks for posting this information.  I have been thinking about going tubeless but was uncertain as to which wheels I should purchase.
