Anybody familiar with CNC's?

I have a Minitech Mini-mill/2 and it must be going on 30 years old.
So old the pc board locators were oozing out the bottom.

I'm having trouble with the z-axis cutting in and out.
The stepper feels like it's off when it cuts out, I'm able to turn it easily.

Naturally, being a cheap basturd I'd like to fix it.
But upgrading to a controller with a USB port would be a plus.
I'd certainly hate to fix this only for all 3 tits going up soon after.

Is that the thing where you shape an electrode to look like the hole you want , then submerge everything in oil and turn the juice on till the electrode burns a hole in your work-piece ?

No, that's a different machine (plunge edm I think)
Mine is a mill controlled by a computer.
It's a tiny thing compared to most mills.
