Mac Noise
02/22/20 at 08:04:45

Well, a mere 4 years after getting my Savage in boxes and buckets and bits, I started it up yesterday!
Truly a religious experience!!!
Good news is that even with a RS40 Mikuni that I had laying around for 25 years, a Web cam, and the Mac exhaust, and no idea what the jetting was, the bike lit right up! Prob did one or two revolutions then started right up. Once I realized that the other tube on the Mikuni was a vacuum port, and closed it with my finger, the bike even idled!!
Bad news, is as has been discussed here, the muffler is way loud. Like loud enough to get you chain whipped by a Quaker, loud.
Anyone figure a way to stick a baffle in the pipe and kill more noise than power? Everything is welded together, so I can't just remove the existing baffle and change or replace it.
Really hate loud bikes.
thanks,
-Armen

I dislike overly loud bikes as well.

And my Whitacre family heritage is Quaker! Wink

Taking into account that I've never seen a Mac muffler . the site said they're straight thru ,with louvers. Not knowing if the louvers project into the center of the muffler or not , or thus the size of the opening they leave.  Partzilla sells -Universal Baffles- that range in size from 1 ,1.5, and 2.5 inches , these are 22gauge 409 stainless , 24, or 48 inches in length , with 1/8 holes (33 per square inch) on 3/16 staggered centers . maybe they could be slipped into the rear of the muffler,or slit down the length and made to fit . (don't know). you might also try to insert a sink strainer  in the muffler outlet?

Congratulations on getting your bike running after such a long road! You should be very proud.

I agree with the previous comment, I'd investigate either the strainer cup solution, or an insert. The good news is that both are pretty inexpensi, so if one doesn't work, the other can be tried without breaking the bank.

Armen ,  Partzilla ( lists them as, Baron Custom accessories ,you might look there as well)

Aftermarket -parts-exhaust-exhaust accessories

   Universal Baffle

   1x24"  LA-1210-24   $ 20.67
    1X48 LA-1210-48   $36.93
AND LARGER SIZES TO 2.5" IN BOTH 24 AND 48 "LENGTH
If you can use something like this you might weld in a center plug and force the exhaust to move up and around it ,that would tend to stop the straight thru design of the Mac ,without much restriction .

Thanks Batman, I'm going to order the one with the packing material. I'll def not be beautiful inside the muffler, but it'll be quieter.
