Spark plug access
09/14/19 at 10:03:57

Sometimes it's the little stuff that makes you crazy. Spark plug access on my bike is a bit annoying. Prob some manufacturing tolerances make some bikes easier than others.
I had already ditched the faux Panhead covers and ground off all the unnecessary mounting nubbins. Then I opened up the valve cover around where the plug is so be able to see what I'm doing. Even with the sheet metal spark plug tool, things were a bit tight.
Put a paper towel plug in the spark plug hole. Got a 6" carbide burr on my pneumatic grinder and started to open things up. Much noise and dust later and the plug and I are much more easily acquainted.
This is the head on the bike now. I have another one which will undergo all sorts of useless stuff and be installed with the 695 kit...

You didn't weigh the head/head cover before and after?  I was hoping to see how many grams you shaved off. Wink

That plug is in a mighty tight spot.  One thing I have noticed is that all the junk in the way has a tendency to keep my 18mm socket sort-of aligned so that I can get the thread started.  But then, getting the loose plug out of the cavity can be a bit of a chore.  I really need a rubber insert for my socket.  A standard 18mm plug socket with an insert won't fit into my stock cavity.  Have you tried a standard spark plug socket in your modified setup?

If you brake it loose , slide a piece of hose over the threads and turn it out/in? /cheap flex -head driver?  add it to your tool kit.

Using the spark plug socket from an old XL250 Honda tool kit. Pretty long and thin, with a rubber insert. Works just peachy Smiley

You’re missing the point....he could always get the plug out.....now the bike is 7 grams lighter.
