intruder 800

Somebody near me has an intruder 800 for sale, 2003, low miles.
It looks like a very clean bike, anybody know anything about this bike?

Thanks, Norman.

I had one for year,... I rode the crap out of it.
Lot's of power,... light and easy to maneuver.
It doesn't like hot weather.
Rev's are higher at 60mph than a Savage.
Two carbs, two air filters (under tank).
Battery is ridiculous.

I bought it for longer rides and higher speeds,... I sold it because I realized I don't really like long, high speed rides.
I do less than 200 miles rides and like under 65mph... (Savage is better)

The Intruder is closest to a crotch rocket motor in a cruiser frame.
Feels surprisingly busy at highway speeds,.. not like a cruiser.
...but it's a solid motor, good runner.  not easy to work on.
Oil changes are super easy,...
front brakes squeal (they call it the Intruder mating call)......

I think it's in a unique place in the motorcycle world.
If it's what you're looking for, nothing else will do.
...but it's unique for reason,... there is no market there.
It's a rev happy cruiser...
JMHO...

Thanks for the comments Sero.

This one is a 2003 with only 1600 miles on it??? Where has it been hiding?

Hopefully in a garage.
Check inside the tank for rust... if there's rust, don't buy it.

Serobot,
I don't think I will like the Quirky carb set up etc.

It is curious that it has only 1600 miles on it.

Thanks for your input. Smiley

Yeah,.. I wish they had done a single carb set-up like a Harley.  It would be worth giving up 5 or 10 ponies for the simplicity.
With that and a sixth gear it would be a pretty sweet bike.

I was surprised to learn that the 800 Intruder, at least some years, has a fuel pump.  I've never heard of a carbureted motorcycle with a fuel pump.  Usually gravity is enough to fill the carb bowls from the tank above them. Maybe all the Intruder years and models had a fuel pump -- don't know.

I had a 2001 VS1400 Intruder and I thought it was a fine cruiser -- I just wasn't too fond of the forward control ergos.

I was thinking of going to see this VS800 but never did . . .

Yamaha vstar 650 has a fuel pump too.

I think they have to squish the carbs up so high under the tank that a pump is needed to make full use of the tank capacity.
It should be a clue to engineers that carbs don't belong up there. Grin

=============================

That reason makes sense, the carbs being too high and not far enough below the tank for gravity to work its magic.

You'd be happy with a Sportster and its single carb .   But don't get one older than a 2004 ... or newer than a 2006 .     Those were the "Golden Years" when they were rubber mounted motors with a single Carb.

In 2007 they went fuel injected and got fuel pumps and another wiring harness.

MM,
I don't think I would buy a Harley. Too heavy, and I like the light weight of the Zuki.

The intruder that was for sale locally disappeared. Sold maybe.

I spent 2 years of my military time at Fort Bliss .   Back then I had a Yamaha XS-650 twin and liked it till the alt. rotor burned out.

if ya need a twin ,

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2005-Moto-Guzzi-Nevada/323851501595?ssPageName=STRK%...

395 ish pounds ,shaft drive , and powered like the intruder without the funky carbs.

I might have to go back to Pennsylvania if you don't buy it ... those removable bags on it are worth the bid price .  Tongue

I am surprised the Oldfeller has not responded....he bought one of these a few years back and just recently sold it.

Oldfeller rides very quickly and loves corners - unfortunately the Intruder did not and the footpeg mounts scraped easily.......it is not a bike to own if you like to lean over in the corners.

=================================

I was in the USAF from 1971-1975 and I bought a new 1972 Yamaha XS650.  I loved that bike.  Drove it cross country, twice.  It vibrated but was super reliable -- put 34K miles on it then sold it.
