Innards Of The Stock Muffler

Does the stock muffler have both packing and a baffle or is it just a baffle?

When I removed my stock muffler I noticed that it had been slightly modded. I'm curious to see what had been changed. It looks like the baffle plate had been cutout and roughly welded back in with a few extra holes drilled around the centre exhaust port. If there was any packing in the muffler, its gone now.

I don't believe there is any packing inside....just tubes and chambers.

Packing is a "wear item" so factory bikes do not use it.  In the dirt world packing only lasts about 8-12 hours before it must be replaced so OEMs don't want to deal with such nonsense.  When the packing wears it causes midrange power loss:  https://www.fmfracing.com/?Content=http://wp.fmfracing.com/wordpress/rider-su...

Junker, here is a dimensional diagram of the stock muffler.  There is no packing.

I also am attaching a flow path diagram.  It's a complicated contraption.  If you have any interest in improving the stock muffler's performance, see my post on page 25 of Rubber Side Down titled "Stock Muffler Eval & Upgrade".  You can make the stock muffler perform pretty good.

Hmmmm .. thanks for the replies guys.

After a closer look, the muffler I have taken off my bike does have packing which looks to be wrapped around the exit end of main single open chamber that runs straight down the middle, from end to end.

The welds on the end plate look to be either filling in holes that have been drilled around the original exhaust port or reconnecting the back plate after having the pop rivets drilled out. Of the holes, 3 have been left open. I don't think they are stock due to the holes being unevenly drilled.

The muffler is a Suzuki / Sankei(?) model numbered Suzuki (x)24b4(x) Sankei 2237 off a 2001 US, non CA model.

Were different muffler designs released to correspond with the changes to USA noise regulations?

I can assure you that the Sankei 2237 did not come from the factory with any sort of packing material inside.  It's all baffles and tubes, no fiberglass of any sort.  100% metal parts.  I will pull forward my prior post so you can get a look at exactly what should be inside a stock Sankei 2237.

Someone has obviously hacked your muffler up and modified the guts.  You can't see all the way through a stock muffler.

I wasn't doubting you DBM. I was just inquiring to see if others had seen something similar and if they would be able to shed a little light on it.  Smiley
