Throttle Cable and Clutch Cable Options
04/04/19 at 11:01:14

Just recently installed mini apes off a 2016 Street Bob Harley on my 1996 Savage. These bars have around 10 inches of rise. I'm trying to figure out the best option for extended cables. I attempted the string measuring method and came up with  53 inches for the throttle and 62 inches for clutch. They weren't super precise but definitely had extra to work with. Cant decide if I should I go through motion pro or someone else. Or for the best option I was hoping stock cables from another bike could give me the length I need without spending a fortune on custom made cables. I tried reaching out to Lancer but I dont have anyway of confirming email delivery. Any information on this subject would be great. Thank you to all of you. This has been a very helpful website.

I read in another thread that the clutch cable for a  Kawasaki VN750 will work with the bars I have. Can anyone confirm? If that's the case I just need a throttle cable.

Surely someone has a clue. I don't, but others have swapped cables.

I only know of 2 options.

Get custom cables built.....Lancer has a contact to get custom cables made.

Make your own cables using parts from Venhill USA.  Their kits work fine as long as you have the proper flux for soldering to steel cable and know how to solder (don't use the flux for plumbing or electrical....it needs to be an acid flux).  I also found that tinning the cable is best done by heating a pool of solder on a piece of steel held in a vice....then rolling the cable end in the hot solder, as trying to use a torch on the cable overheats it quickly).

Venhill can also make you an extended brake line.  Their brake line is excellent quality and has a very nice, tight stainless weave with a plastic coating that will not scratch your paint.

I actually have been looking at venhill! Looking at the kits do you know if any of them have the 90 degree bends on the ends the stock cables have or is it possible to remove the ones off of the stock cables and re use them? I'd love to go through Lancer cause that would be simpler. But if you know if they come off that would make the new ones construction alot easier.

You can adapt and re-use the stock fittings.

Well I guess if I order the Venhill kit I can attempt to learn a skill! Doesnt look like Lancer gets on very often but if he does hopefully he can notice and save me some hassle. But thank you for the info! Had to switch to different handlebar controls and this forum has been very helpful.

I recently installed 16 inch apes.  I had new cables made through my local shop.  I increased each cable by 17 inches.  For the three cables needed, I paid $108.00.

Playhard67 that's awesome! My local shop wanted to charge me almost 150 each cable. Something seemed wrong with those numbers!

yep.. They reused some parts.... 90 degree metal bend at the clutch lever, and the connector for the throttle.  Other than that...all new.

Are you still offering cables Lancer? If so I'd be very interested!

I knew Bob Harley. He was doing fine, till he lost his job. Then he became
Street Bob Harley.
