Remove the steering stem
10/28/18 at 09:14:56
Howdy
Di I really need special tool to remove the steering stem from the lower fork clamp? Or is it removable by carefully forcing it out from the bottom?
If so, can it pressed back in using common tools?
Or should I have the local dealer do this??
Thx
john

I have pressed one out (and back in) on a friend press.....it was no big deal.
Be sure to mark the stem/yoke with a marker before you take it out, as you need to bet them in proper alignment if you want the fork lock to work properly.

Why would you need to? Is it damaged? Are you changing the forks?

I want to have the upper and lower fork clamps powder coated...otherwise there is nothing wrong.
I guess I could paint both clamps, but want a more professional job.
Make sense?
thx

To all..given this sounds more complicated and exacting that I assumed, suppose I should have the dealer take care of this.
Thanks...

Would in be necessary to pull the stem? Pull the bearings and tape off the stem before spraying. Then pull the tape before baking. Check with your powder coater.

Getting the bearing and rubber seal off is a real difficult task....it is easier to push the stem out of the yoke, seal and bearing at the same time. There just isn't a good way to get a good hold on the bearing to pull it off, as the inner race is inaccessible.

Makes sense. I have never pulled a bearing off a steering stem. I've cut 'em off a car spindle often enough. But that has more mass. Not a big deal if you nick it.
