bike dying & hard to start

OK my daughter has a 2009 S40 3500 miles got it used has a V&H exhaust & the people i got it from had it jetted (i don't know what jet) today we went on a road trip and the bike started fine as it always does ran down the highway at 65 to 70 ran 20 miles no problem's  went to take off from a stop it stalled had a hard time getting it to start had to have the throttle 1/4 to 1/2 open to get it to start. then she went down the road to turn into the gas station let off the throttle pulled in clutch it stalled again hard time getting it to start. this went on every time she let off the throttle pulled in clutch. as long as she did not let off the throttle or pulled in the clutch it ran fine.

Try cleaning the pilot jet. Or if you are ambitious clean the entire carb.

More than likely the fuel petcock has failed. It's the MOST common problem found on the Savage. A quick search on the forum will lead you to the fix.

8 year old petcock, yeah it's most likely the culprit.

Do you choke it to start?
I'd look at what jets you have.
Normally, it runs fast when warm.

It's also possible to have a clogged gas tank vent.

Yep, fuel petcock.  Mine did the same thing this summer but luckily I already had a new Yamaha Raptor petcock on the shelf waiting for the day when the stock one would fail.  I wanted to see how long it would take, the original lasted 13 years.

Get official Yamaha part.
The cheap knockoffs have the wrong size fuel tubes.
