Metallic Clang on Engine Shutdown
09/04/18 at 07:00:07

So I have tried doing some searching and didn't find anything regarding this.  When I shut the bike off there is a metallic clang about 70% of the time.  I have read on other forums for other bikes that single cylinder engines will do this if the engine cuts off mid compression stroke.  Is this normal for the Savages?

I would be very concerned with this on your year of bike as you don't have starter torque limiter.
You might want to consider an upgrade.

Verslagen answered what I was leading up to.
It's seriously cam chain time if you haven't been in there.

Unless you know someone has serviced it I would not start it again.

Yep, it's a time bomb. Have a look at the cam chain before it all gets expensive.

Kick back of the piston doesn't happen anywhere near 70% of the time ,and could be stopped by pulling out the choke a second before hitting the kill switch . I agree with the guys ,check your cam chain tensioner asap.

I could be off on the 70% thing.  Ive only started the bike about 6 times and it's made the noise enough times that I noticed it.  I won't be starting it again and it's coming inside next week to be worked on..

I've never heard a metallic clang when shutting down my '87. Is this something I should be concerned with?

My 96 does that kickback when it happens to stop on compression stroke.  Always has, as did my 86 as near as I remember.  And I agree that upgrading to a later model starter drive is good insurance.

Others here know more about this than I do, but we have heard of  a loose nut that holds the flywheel ,but it is very rare (2-3 ) and I am not sure if it would make a "clang" or just increase vibration.

No clang.......horrible banging sound at idle that can be heard from a block away.  The faster the engine goes the less noticeable the noise.

At idle it sounds like the rod is going to come loose at any second, and the banging coincides with the power pulses as the loose flywheel bangs on the splines.
