1996 Savage, yellow
08/29/18 at 10:42:59

I am looking at buying a 96 Suzuki Savage with 800 original miles.  It is in very good condition.  Seller was asking 1500, but I got him down to 1000.  Is this a good deal on this bike?  Anything in particular I should be looking for?  I am going to inspect the bike this evening, so any input would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a link or advertisement we can look at, or at least images you can post here if you are shy about sharing the source of a possible "good deal".

Also, where are you located as pricing can vary with different regions.

If that is all accurate and it hasn't been wrecked or otherwise damaged, that's a fair deal.  It also depends on the actual condition and if it was stored out in the elements (rain) and the heat/cold exchanges or if it was taken care of and stored in a garage.

You will likely have to invest a few bucks to make it "safe" to ride.  Even though the miles are low, unless there are relatively new tires on it and they have sales receipts to prove it plan on getting new tires as old tires dry rot and are not safe. May need a few other things like vacuum hoses and new fuel line, which tend to dry rot over time but nothing bad.

- Inspect inside the tank for rust.
- If it has run recently I would of course want to hear it run.
- If it has sat for years without ever being turned over it may not be the best idea to try to "crank" it because there is no oil on the top end.  But I would want to at least know that the motor isn't locked up and you aren't being sold a bike with a locked up engine. Maybe hook up a good battery and bump the starter just to get a revolution or two on the piston and stop (will not turn over if in gear and kickstand down).  If you spin it over and over after sitting for years you can risk scarring the cylinder wall. There is a procedure for putting oil on the top end (in the spark plug hole) for a bike that has been sitting for LONG time.

There are other things we can guide you on when you have it in hand such as lubricating the cylinder if it has been sitting, carburetor adjustments, etc. to get it running optimum.

I see a garage, which seems that it has been garage stored. I also see the headlight ON which makes me think that it is running given that it has a good battery in it? If so, that's good!

Looks like a pretty clean bike. Header is blue which means it is running lean as most bikes are from the factory. Not a problem, and we (us helping guide you) can fix that very quickly with carb adjustments if you are semi-mechanical and can tinker.  DON'T buy this bike and send it to the dealer for work...they know less about these bikes than we do because they work on them so seldom.

Unless the tires are replacement tires that are only a few years old (tires have date stamp codes you can look at too) assume they are original and will need to be replaced. I don't care what anyone tells you about "only 800 miles".   Old age, especially 22 years worth, on motorcycle tires is a death wish.

Looks like a nice scooter.  Ditto on replacing the tires, unless the current owner has done that already.

If you don't buy it there's about 8000+ guys on this site that would. Even if you end up hating the bike you could double you money selling it.
