Differences in gas caps
07/22/18 at 17:40:40

Today I picked up a gas tank that was better than the one I have on my bike now ( thanks again verslagen1)

The tank I got is a non Cali smog vented tank and I have a Cali bike.
I figured I would drill a small hole in the gas cap and be gtg...but!

Much to my surprise the Cali cap doesn't fit the other tank.
The indexing tabs on the gas cap are much wider than the corresponding grooves in the tank.

Questions are...If I find a 49 state cap can I switch the lock so I can use the current key?

Or

Can I take the caps apart and switch the plastic part that has the indexing tabs on it?

I didn't expect this little detour! Cheesy

I am by no means an expert on the subject but Versy said that the CA cap is also vented ,so there is no need to drill it, which when I thought about it made perfect sense. Air still as to enter the tank when the level drops, so the cap must be vented.
I would think that swapping the index tabs would solve your problem , or carefully file the present tabs(a bit on each side) narrower, and you wouldn't need to swap the lock, or find another cap.

So ... determining which lug fits in the 8mm slot and filing one of the 10mm lugs down to 8mm might allow the cap to be used?Or would the qther 10mm lug going into a 12mm slot create a problem? I think I'd try this as you really have nothing to loose.
