Frame and Exhaust Q's from a new owner
05/28/18 at 11:21:18

Hi there!  I recently picked up a 2012 S40 in awesome orange!  I've pulled out the idle mixture screw and fattened the mix and she's running fantastically.  I've spent a couple of weeks trolling this forum and there's still 2 quick Q's I can't find answers to, so here goes:
- What the heck is the part of the Frame with the 4 holes in the attached photo?  The pic is taken through the drive belt and you can see exhaust on the other side.  This seems completely useless, can it be removed?
- My bike only has about 600 miles on it and the exhaust header is already blueing.  I've read that these are mixed lean from the factory, but should it really be getting blue already after only 600 miles on stock settings?

Thanks!

those are for the carbon canister mandated by epa controlled states.
if you ever go to a mini battery, it could be a place to mount it.

blueing from the factory? naw they wouldn't do that.
but if up the main to 150 it will stop doing that.

Don't start the bike up and let it idle for any length of time on the sidestand.  It can blue the pipe as there is no air flow to keep it cool, and idling on the sidestand can starve the exhaust rocker arm/cam lobe for oil.

Do you ride in a lot of traffic?  Is it really humid where you live?

Don't remove the bracket assembly it holds your exhaust on. Smiley

Thanks for the replies!  Mostly highway/country backroads for the 100 miles I've put on it in the 2 weeks since I bought it.  It's not been humid here either, mostly 70s and clear.  I have been letting it idle on the kickstand quite a bit, though, while I putz around with carb idle mix and speed.  I'll try only idling while I'm on it and its upright, and then look at replacing the main jet.

Thanks again!

Idle
About 1100

Get ready to ride

Check the bike
Get dressed
Fire up
Ride away

Don't start the bike and idle it on the sidestand - for carb adjustment put something under the sidestand to help keep the bike nearly vertical.
