I don't smoke, but my S40 does

I was finally able to stop scratching my head, trying to figure out why my bike would not fire.

Turned out to be that after all my double checking, I should have been more delicate when re-attaching hoses. A small separation in the walls of my main petcock to carb hose collapsed inside the hose..blockage+starter button=no ignition (in my case)

After cleaning up the hose issue my bike successfully fired. I warmed it up with the choke out and then reset the choke when it was warm. I had the bike idle for about 2 minutes and then noticed smoke.

The smoke was slightly exiting through the motor/exhaust header, slightly through the stock pipe and a little blowback into the air filter.

Smoke was white..if anything a light light grayish white

Im not sure if in my attempt to clean up the carb that maybe the air/fuel mixture screw is out of adjustment or if my idle screw has any bit to do with the smoke.

Fuel/Air screw is backed out 2 full turns from being all the way seated.

Bike also started to smell like it was running hot after just idling that short time..I checked the sight glass and the new oil I had put in with under 5 miles is rather dark.

Back to scratching for now. Huh

If you still have the OEM petcock installed (or recently swapped it without an oil change), it sounds like you might have fuel in your oil. Remove the oil fill cap and take a whiff; if it smells like fuel you know where the problem is.

I wish I could have some of that wisdom you all have.

I did recently remove the OEM petcock for the Raptor conversion. That was after the oil change.

Making me now wish I had done it the other way around.

I will check the oil cap and see what I have.

Thanks friend.

And don't let it idle on the sidestand.  It starves the right side of the cam for oil.

how did you see smoke blowing back threw the air filter? did you have the air box open, or was the smoke just in the area  of the air filter box? There is a "tunnel" in the head that starts just above the exhaust pipe in the front and is open to the rear, and if you have the dreaded head plug leak or a leak past a head bolt copper washer it could allow oil smoke to form and travel both ways.

Mine smokes for the first little bit when I first start it on cold mornings.  I can see whitish smoke drifting in front of the headlight.  Stops after a bit.  It was about 30 degrees this morning and smoked when started.  I get a stronger exhaust smell when this happens, too.

Thanks everyone for the input!

I removed my oil cap cover and there is a hint of fuel to the smell.

I'm going to change the oil and filter but, is there anything anyone else may recommend beyond that.

As far as the smoke, I have my seat off and saw smoke exit the venting tunnels that lead up towards the seat (Airbox cover on). Just a small amount exiting the exhaust pipe / exhaust header.

Snot a venting tunnel.
That's the intake.

The smoke that you saw escaping from everywhere was actually steamed gasoline. Gasoline has a low boiling point, much lower than oil, and once it gets hot enough it escapes from everywhere it can. Since it's mixed and cooled by the oil, there is no chance of it reaching its flash point.

What Gary said, and the fact that gas moves both ways through the carb at rpms less than peak torque( 3500 rpm) due to the piston rising with the intake valve still open (reversion), and the breather hose from the crank case to the air box removing fumes/air  when the piston moves down. The cloud you see in your headlight is  your motor warning up the air around it ,like seeing your breath on a cold day.(normal)
