That sounds Fun. Great training.
Aaand, probably nobody gets to do that now.

It was a different philosophy back then...growing up in a country school surrounded by cornfields.  A few of they gym classes were devoted to the "Hunter's Safety Course" where they taught safe gun handling and hunting methods.

They stopped after a few kids got killt?

I used to raise snakes....had a couple copperheads.

Want another one? It might have holes in it and stink by the time you get it?  Shocked

I hatched out a buncha black widows, and they killed each other..

And I killed two baby copperheads not long ago.
Moccasins, rattlers, copperheads, all get the same kinda dead.

It much more fun to capture one , that might be the only time I'm more focused than when I'm riding. Just the tiniest distraction and your bit. I think it's more dangerous letting them go than it is catching them. Cause by then the snake is really pissed off and waiting for its chance for revenge. But I totally understand why people kill them , Fear & Ignorance !
Overcoming fear is tough , overcoming ignorance close to impossible. I realize their danger and how easy it is to kill them rather than relocating.
I advise not messing with any snakes unless you know what you are  doing. Even a large non poisonous gopher snake can really put some hurt on you.
Just watch them , most of the time they will be on their way once they see you , some harassment helps too. Most snakes won't leave if you are a threat , too close , just back off a let them be on their way.

I have family and pets.
If it was just me, I'm not so vindictive.
I caught and released a buncha rattlesnakes in the oilfield.
Man, when they are upset they can crap and make a stench that will gag ya,,

I used to catch Milk Snakes up in New England back when I was a kid. The aren't poisonous but boy could they bite. There was a big one that lived in a stone wall in the back yard, it was close to 4 feet long. I would always go after just because it was there. Man that sucker would get a piece of me every now and then and draw blood.
Glad there weren't any poisonous snakes in the area, would of gotten bit messing with them. Wink

One of the smelliest smells is when you gut and skin a diamondback. Once in the nose it lingers a couple days.

If you got snakes you also have their prey. Work on getting rid of rodents. When there is no prey , snakes will go where there is prey.
