The height of generator cover.Help!
09/25/17 at 14:39:36

Hi guys! I'm new. My English is not very good, but I will try to be clear.
Suddenly I bought this fine classic iron and simple motorcycle. But I do not know the exact year of its production. The gearbox has 5 speeds, it means not earlier than 1993. I want to know if I have a potential starter problem. But I do not have a gasket so I can not remove the generator cover now to see it. I know that on models since 1996 this problem was fixed by Suzuki, putting another gear and a deeper generator cover. I measured the thickness of this cover to determine if I have this problem. It is approximately 74-75mm. The method of measurement is in the picture. Please see what is the thickness of this cover on your bikes.

First ,off didn't you receive the title ,when you got the bike?If you what to know the year ,it is on the steering neck (where the forks go through the frame.,on the right side .) the difference in the side covers is inside, the newer gear being made of layers is wider than the old solid gear. The covers look the same from the outside.

The thickness is the same for all years.
They removed material from inside to accommodate the torque limiter gear.
So you can not figure this out from the outside.

What's the engine number?

The bike is used from Japan. They never specify the year of production, only the first registration. It may be different. The Japanese rules and conceptions are very hard to understand. They have not VINs for domestic market. Our Russians businessmen like to underestimate the year for the Customs. So I have two dates- 1994 from Customs and 1996 from seller. I even contacted to Japan Suzuki through my partner-Japanese from US to clear the question by the frame number. They asked- you will laugh- "The model year of your motor cycle is 1986, and the style name is Suzuki NP41A.  They said there were two handle styles – “flat handle” (LS650F) and “up handle” (LS650U), and yours appears to be LS650U."
The number of the frame   NP41A-103339, engine  P401 115290.

By the way, the starter works perfectly, there are no extraneous knocking at the start and after the motor has stopped. In what way is this problem expressed? Knocking? Blows? Scraping?
