Need help troubleshooting electrical issue
09/16/17 at 16:21:36
Hello everybody,
My bike is running fine since last time I posted, but there's a new issue afoot. All of the following happened overnight, so one incident caused all of the following:
1. Headlamp does not turn on, lows or highs. The blue headlamp indicator on the console lights up for highs as it should.
2. Left Rear Turn Signal Lamp does not turn on. The green left turn indicator arrow does not turn on as it should.
3. Both front turn signal lamps shine, but the front left turn signal lamp does not blink.
4. No lights blink when I switch the hazard lights on.
I've taken my seat off and explored every wire outside of the tape. I've changed the bulb on the rear turn lamp and the headlamp to no effect (just to be sure). I've checked every fuse I could find. I took the headlamp off and figured out which wires are (most likely) which.
Today, before it started raining, I found an interesting black box wedged between the front fork and the gas tank on the left. I took it off its mount and it does not contain a fuse but it's a solid black box. Is this what they call a relay?
Is there a definitive electrical problems check procedure? Do I have to start cutting wires out of the tape?
Thanks!!
AJ

PUT THE WIRE CUTTERS AWAY. It's much more effective to use a shotgun...JK.
Check the connectors on each side of the frame... remove replace.

When both beams of the headlight go out.....it generally is the ground wire in the harness. Test the headlight wires (white/yellow) and see if there is power to them - if so test the black ground wire and confirm it provides a ground.

As suggested above, check the wire harness connectors from the handlebars back for corrosion and make sure they click together. I'd use dielectric grease on reassembly.
Do you have critters in your garage? Perhaps they chewed on some wires between the tank and the engine. They do love a nice warm place to sleep and eat.

Thanks to you both I can't wait to get up and try in the daylight. I'll check connectors on the frame and test white/yellow headlight wires after I go to home depot and get a volt meter.
Thanks again

Hi Gary,
THanks for responding. I keep my bike outside so it's entirely possible. The handle bar connectors are the plastic pieces that are like male and female electrical components right? I've been pulling them apart and putting them together and blowing them out with air in a can. Did not know I should get grease but I'll look for some while im out at home depot.

Hi,
I destroyed first multimeter and will get new one this afternoon.
Is there a guide on how to read a chart like this:
http://suzukisavage.com/yabb2.2/Attachments/2007-2009_Wiring_Diagram.jpg
Is the black/white striped wire coming from the headlight the ground write?
Thank you!

Cool, not ground write..
Easy enough,
For the future, in the upper write
there is a Modify button.
Click it, go to the mistake, click, backspace, change the word, hit Save.

How did you wreck the meter?
They usually have a fuse, even harbor freight meters have one. Hard wired in, IIRC, but replaceable with care and determination.
