Carb Questions
05/23/17 at 07:35:35

2001 Suzuki Savage LS650
Stock to best of my knowledge.

Bought the bike a year ago, as a winter project. Life happens...
Working on getting it running now, so started with cleaning the carb and checking for correct jetting.

Here is what I found:
Main Jet ... 280
Pilot Jet ... 52.5

Two jets on top of carb were 145 and a 45. The 145 was the bigger of the two. It appears that the 45 is the Pilot Air Jet. But what is the

I can't tell what the, the manual calls it an I.D. Number, of the carb, and shows different jetting for each.

Does this I.D. Number matter? Or can I follow factory jetting specs for it?

Where are you located and did the bike run when you got it?  Did the PO do a lot of work to it?

It sounds like someone may have had that carb apart.  I'm pretty sure the 145 should be the main and the 280 should be on top.

Yes I believe Ohiomoto is correct, we've seen this before ,someone had the carb apart for cleaning and misplaced the jets ,the stock jets for the idle is 52.5 main jet 145 both in the bowl area the 280 is an air jet that should be up under the slide diaphragm.

The 145 is most certainly the main jet and the 45 is the pilot. Before we can recommend jetting and needle height, we will need to know:

- Where you live (region & altitude)?
- What modifications you have to the intake, exhaust and/or engine?
- What problems are you experiencing with your current set-up?
- In general, how does the bike run / perform?
- Your mechanical ability? One of the changes may involve drilling out a cover/plug on the carb body.

Thanks guys. I am in Kentucky. Far as I can tell the bike is stock.
Bought it off a lady who can't ride any more. I didn't check to see if it would run, only that the engine would turn over, since it was going to be a project bike. It had sat for over a year when I bought it. PO said last time it was running, it was sluggish at speed. I figured the 280 main jet was wrong, but couldn't find anything on the 280 jet.

Gary is incorrect the 45 is not the idle jet ,52.5 is the idle jet .the 45 belongs up top with the 280, It 's the air jet for the choke.

Batman: That's the way I put it back together. Only place the 45 fit in the list of jet specs.

Got it running and took a quick spin. Still need to do some adjustments on air mixture screw. Started at 3 turns out from soft seat.

You warm the motor , and turn the idle screw out to slow it(the screw on the left side with the spring (so you can hear the motor speed up/slow down) as you turn the idle mix screw, set the mix to get the highest idle, then bring the idle back up 1000+ for proper oil pressure.

Hello, maybe I can borrow this thread too  Smiley
New owner with a -91
Just opened up my carb for rejetting for a pipe and open filter, the carb looks untouched, but...
When looking at this

http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/rerun/Mikuni_101web.jpg

The #8 part, the spring isn't there  Huh

The bike ran fine when I picked it up so whats going on...

Does anyone know the part number for that spring?  Huh

BTW the stock jets for a 1991 Euro spec where #130 main and a 47.5 pilot.

Im going to try #152.5 main and 55 pilot. (Cold climate, sea level).

46&2, looking at the specks of our calif models ,which should be similar to euro carbs, it appears you have a different jet needle and needle jet than what is standard on our bikes. the stock jetting for the calif model being 47.5 pilot 125 main ,Id think about going only about two sizes up on each to start, that would be 52.5 pilot 145 main, I think anything larger to start might be way to rich.Even these may be , you'll have to test by using a new sparkplug , running at a decent speed and killing the engine ,and pulling the plug to check for proper color /soot.
