What about a greater distance between teeth?
Not having held one in hand, I'm not sure this is even possible but it would allow more room to wear before catching the next tooth.
I like the old Honda tensioner where you release the set screw to allow it to take up slack when you do your valves. The rest of the time the chain just runs at that set adjustment.

Did you read what Batman did? He took out the pawl and just lets it run on the spring only. He claims that it has been fine.
I will do the same thing but for a solid rod in the middle of the spring to limit back movement initially.
