My Ryca Bobber Build
04/23/17 at 17:31:46

I bought a 2002 Savage on April 10th with 5k miles for $1k - I ordered my Ryca Bobber kit the next day. Started taking the bike apart. So happy for all the videos out there to help me put it back together again.

Looks like a good start....you have a ways to go yet!

Since you are really early in your build, maybe you can benefit from the things I have learned about the tires on a Cafe' bike.  The 130/70-18 tire is too wide for a 18x2.50 rim.  If you want to run a tire that size you need to get a 18x3.50 rim.  The 130/70 tire is made to fit on the 3.50 rim, and if you mount it on a 2.50 rim you are pulling the tire beads in a full inch, and that creates a tread profile that is too round.....it rolls tread over onto the sidewalls where you will never be able to use it, and it makes a narrow contact patch.  If you want to use a 18x2.50 rim it is best to use a 120/80-18 tire.  The 120/80 tire is almost as wide as a 130/70 tire on a 18x2.50 rim, and the tread profile is not distorted as the sidewalls are not pulled in a full inch.

The RYCA tail light with built in turn signals is nearly invisible in the daylight, and it will not get a distracted drivers attention.  I did not use the RYCA tail light - instead I bought one that has a red lens and is the running and brake light without turn signals - and I added LED brake light to my bike and I put it under the seat bottom - just about the point where the rear seat pan bolts to the frame.  The light is not visible to anyone walking around and casually looking at the bike - but to a driver behind the bike it is very visible and very bright.  I used an emergency strobe from StrobesRUs - it is red and can be set for continuous operation as a brake light.  I used a 6 strobe light and it is a bit to bright and I toned it down with a layer of red tape - this 4 light until might be better.

As mentioned above....the rear turn signals incorporated into the tail light are not noticeable.  I recommend mounting a good set of rear turn signals that can actually be seen in sunlight.

Good luck with your build....it is a fun project.  You should check out the Bike Builds Section to see what others have done.

Look at Gary_in_NJ Tech Section article on suspension.  Lowering the front end by installing spacers makes for a really rough riding bike - using a top triple clamp that allows you to raise the fork tubes to lower the front end makes for a much better ride.

Olive drab?  It should be interesting to see what kind of color scheme you come up with.

Yeah always great seeing a build thru the builders eyes , that's where the magic happens !  I never paint until at least 3rd mock up , I do a lot of changes along the way !

The Rustoleum paint has yet to dry. It's been days.
I even brought it into the house where it's less humid.
Going to strip it off and use Krylon.

Better yet.....buy a 2K paint.  They have cans that you activate, and a catalyst mixes with the paint.  The paint is far more durable, and it doesn't react to paint and oil.

You can get it from Eastwood, or some of the local professional auto paint supply businesses can mix up the cans for you.  It will be more expensive - but it will last.
