Suggestions for a license plate holder solution.

I'm looking at this item on eBay,
uAAAOSwF1dUTf6A" target="_blank">http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Chrome-Side-Mount-License-Plate-Tail-Light-For-Suzuki-Savage-LS-650-/310984450933?hash=item48681e2375:g
uAAAOSwF1dUTf6A
However I cannot see how it's meant to be fitted.
The problem with the current set up is that it does not support the license plate properly and when it cracks, as it is doing again on the top right corner, it's costs $45 for a new plate.
All solutions welcome.

A strip of metal riveted on the back,
A cut down and fitted "washer" under the bolts.

Cut a piece of 1/4 plywood to use as backing plate.

OK I might have to back it with something but I like the look of the item I linked but I can't work out how it is meant to fit!

That thing you linked to is a side mount. The big hole on the side is for the axle to go through. It's for bobbers and choppers. It'll get you a defect notice in QLD pretty quick I think. Non compliant number plates are easy pickings and a solid fine.
Try a thin chopping board from IKEA or the Reject Shop or something to back the number plate up with.

A motorcycle plate frame is another option. Adds a bit of bling and reinforces as well. Comes in a variety of materials, messages, colors, etc

Most motorcycle problems are caused by the nut between the seat and the handlebars. Make sure yours isn't too tight or too loose.

My Savage had a frame around the plate that worked well. It came with the bike so I don't know much about it.
As a kid, I had a Ducati 250 scrambler. That thing would start cracking a license plate in just a few days. I solved it by actually mounting 2 plates, an old one under the new one. This was back when new plates were issued every year, so there were always old license plates laying around the garage.
The stacked plates lent a somewhat "rat" vibe to the bike. It probably is not the solution for everyone.

Three layers of duct tape on the back of the plate solved it for me. Flat washer under the head of the mounting screw too.

I "sandwich" the plate between two rubber washers on each bolt, and then I also use one rubber washer behind the license holder. I also use some fender washers to support the rubber washers, and I then use a Bolt and a nyloc nut so I don't have to tighten to keep together. Never had a cracked license plate! Never had bolts come apart either!
I also use a license frame and sometimes a thin sheet of aluminum cut to same size as plate.

I cut the bottom out of an aluminum meat loaf pan and used it as reinforcement on the back of licence plate.

plate frames here in New York can cost you money, they passed a law that if the frame edge is wide enough to cover any part of the writing or numbers ,like the words New York at the top or The Empire State at the bottom you are subject to a fine ($150 + court costs$75 )I do run a very thin plate frame and back the plate with thin alum. to prevent damage from cracking, but I'm careful to no give the cops a legal reason to pull me over and ticket me.

After my no plate started to split, I just drilled new holes in it near the centre rather than the top and remounted it sitting higher, no further problem

I did the same thing as Jasbee.
I drilled new holes in the license plate
midway between the top and bottom
and bolted it back on the stock bracket.
It looks better because the plate doesn't
hang as low under the fender and the light
illuminates it better.
It doesn't flex as much with vibration and
wind and there's more metal around the
holes to resist cracking.
Add a washer under each bolt head for
even more strength.
My plate hasn't cracked or bent in the
three years since I did this.
